Friday in the twenty-ninth week through the year

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every morning from 7 a.m.

Consideration

Wanting the good, therefore, does not mean we do the good. Evil dwells within us – it is almost attached to our very being. We should not always think of it as a temptation or an impulse coming at us from outside: the temptation is situated in our own hearts. That is why it is always wrong, and artificial, to justify our misdeeds by blaming others, by pointing the finger at the world. Evil, like good, dwells within us: it manifests itself through the choice we make. Why are good and evil present in us together? The coexistence of the two means that the pursuit of perfection often leads to an impasse: we want to do good, but we do what is evil. It leads us to the salutary realisation that only with God is salvation.

FIRST READING        Eph. 4, 1-6

One body, one Lord, one faith, one baptism.

From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Ephesus

Brothers and sisters,

I, the prisoner in the Lord urge you :
Lead a life that responds
to the calling you have received from God,
in all humility and meekness, in longsuffering,
loving one another.
Strive
maintain the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace :
One body and one Spirit,
as ye also are called to one and the same hope
for which God’s calling is the guarantor.
One Lord, one faith, one baptism.
One God and Father of all,
who is above all, and with all, and in all.

INTERLUDIUM       Ps. 24(23), 1-2, 3-4ab, 5-6

This is the generation that turns to the Lord,
that stands before the face of Jacob’s God.

To God belongs the earth and all that is upon it,
the disk of the earth and all that dwells therein;
for He founded her on the water,
established her on the sea.

Who shall ascend the mountain of the Lord,
who shall stand in his sanctuary ?
Who is pure of hands and pure of heart,
sets not his sights on what is evil.

He will be blessed by the Lord,
rewarded by God, his redeemer.
So does the generation that turns to Him,
that stands before the face of Jacob’s God.

ALLELUIA          Col 3, 16a, 17c

Alleluia.
The word of Christ
may dwell among you in full riches ;
give thanks to God the Father through Him.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL           Lk 12:54-59

From the image of land and sky
do you know the right meaning,
but then why not of this age?

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

At that time Jesus said to the crowd:
“When ye see a cloud coming up from the west ,
then you say at once, rain is coming; and so it does.
And when you see a south wind blowing, you say:
It will be glowing; and it happens.
Hypocrites!
From the image of land and sky
do you know the right meaning,
but why not of this time?
Why is it
that you do not draw the right conclusion from yourselves?
When ye go to the government with your counterpart,
then on the way make an effort to get rid of him;
otherwise he may well drag thee before the judge;
the judge will hand you over to the bailiff
and the bailiff will throw you into prison.
I say to thee:
Thou shalt not get out
until thou hast paid to the last penny.”
