Gij ontfermt U over allen, omdat Gij houdt van alles wat bestaat. 

Uit het boek Wijsheid

Heer, heel de aarde is voor U
als een stofje op de weegschaal,
als een vroege dauwdruppel die neervalt op aarde.
Maar Gij ontfermt U over allen,
want Gij vermoogt alles;
en Gij let niet op de zonden der mensen,
opdat ze tot inkeer komen.
Gij houdt immers van alles wat bestaat,
en verafschuwt niets van wat Gij geschapen hebt;
want zoudt Gij iets haten, dan hadt Gij het niet geschapen.

Hoe zou er iets kunnen blijven bestaan tegen uw wil,
hoe zou behouden kunnen blijven wat Gij niet gemaakt hebt?
Ja, alles spaart Gij, want alles is van U,
en Gij heerst vol liefde over al wat leeft!

Uw onvergankelijke geest is aanwezig in alles wat bestaat.
Daarom straft Gij de zondaars met mate,
en herinnert ze waarschuwend aan hun zonden,
opdat ze hun boosheid verlaten
en trouw blijven aan U, Heer.

Uw Naam, mijn God, wil ik verheerlijken voor altijd.

De Heer is vol liefde en medelijden,

TWEEDE  LEZING           2 Tess. 1,11 – 2,2

De naam van Christus zal in u verheerlijkt worden, en gij in Hem.

Uit de tweede brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Tessalonica

Broeders en zusters,

Telkens opnieuw bidden wij onze God,
dat Hij u zijn roeping waardig maakt
en al uw goede voornemens en elke daad van uw geloof
met macht tot volkomenheid brengt.
Dan zal de Naam van onze Heer Jezus in u verheerlijkt worden
– en gij in Hem –
door de genade van onze God en de Heer Jezus Christus.

Wij moeten u echter verzoeken, broeders en zusters,
in verband met de komst van onze Heer Jezus Christus
en onze hereniging met Hem
niet zo gauw uw bezinning te verliezen.
Laat u toch niet opschrikken
door profetieën of uitspraken of een brief
die van ons afkomstig zouden zijn, en die beweren
dat de dag van de Heer is aangebroken.

EVANGELIE              Lc. 19, 1-10

De Mensenzoon is gekomen om te zoeken en te redden wat verloren was.

Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens Lucas

In die tijd ging Jezus Jericho binnen.
Terwijl Hij er doorheen trok,
poogde een zekere Zacheüs,
hoofdambtenaar bij het tolwezen en een rijk man,
te zien wie Jezus was.
Maar hij slaagde daarin niet vanwege de menigte,
want hij was klein van gestalte.
Om Hem toch te zien liep hij hard vooruit
en klom in een wilde vijgenboom
omdat Jezus daar langs zou komen.

Toen Jezus bij die plaats kwam
keek Hij omhoog en zei tot hem:
“Zacheüs, kom vlug naar beneden,
want vandaag moet Ik in uw huis te gast zijn.”
Zacheüs kwam snel naar beneden en ontving Hem vol blijdschap.
Allen zagen dat en merkten morrend op:
“Hij is bij een zondaar zijn intrek gaan nemen!”

Maar Zacheüs trad op de Heer toe en sprak:
“Heer, bij deze schenk ik de helft van mijn bezit aan de armen;
en als ik iemand iets afgeperst heb
geef ik het hem vierdubbel terug.”

Jezus sprak tot hem:
“Vandaag is dit huis heil ten deel gevallen,
want ook deze man is een zoon van Abraham.
De Mensenzoon is immers gekomen om te zoeken
en om te redden wat verloren was.”

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis

220. Deze bekering brengt verschillende houdingen met zich mee die samengaan om een edelmoedige en liefderijke zorg op gang te brengen. Op de eerste plaats houdt zij dankbaarheid en belangeloosheid in, dat wil zeggen een erkenning van de wereld als een gave die van de liefde van de Vader is ontvangen, een erkenning die als consequentie een belangeloze bereidheid om afstand te doen en edelmoedige gebaren teweeg brengt, ook als niemand die ziet of erkent: “Laat uw linkerhand niet weten wat uw rechter doet (…) en uw Vader die in het verborgene ziet, zal het u vergelden” (Mt. 6, 3-4) . Zij houdt ook het liefdevolle bewustzijn in dat men niet gescheiden is van de andere schepselen, maar met de andere wezens van het heelal een schitterende universele gemeenschap vormt. Voor een gelovige kijkt men niet van buiten af, maar van binnen uit naar de wereld en erkent daarbij de banden waarmee de Vader ons heeft verenigd met alle wezens. Omdat de ecologische bekering de bijzondere capaciteiten die God elke gelovige heeft gegeven, laat groeien, brengt hem dit er bovendien toe zijn creativiteit en enthousiasme te ontwikkelen om de drama’s van de wereld op te lossen, zich daarbij aan God aanbiedend “als een levende, heilige offergave” (Rom. 12, 1) . Hij interpreteert de eigen superioriteit niet als een reden voor persoonlijke roem of onverantwoordelijke overheersing, maar als een andere capaciteit die hem op haar beurt een zware verantwoordelijkheid oplegt die voortvloeit uit zijn geloof.

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Opening word
Little Zacchaeus climbed a tree
to be able to see the Lord.
Jesus soon noticed him
and called him down.
He promised Zacchaeus his friendship
and wanted to be a guest with him.
Today, Jesus also wants to visit us.
He speaks to us and touches us.
He calls us to become new people.
In the eyes of the Lord, we are never too small.
Let us trust in that,
celebrate the Eucharist
and give thanks for so much of God’s love,
every single day.

 

FIRST READING        Wis. 11,22-12,2

Thou dost have mercy on all, because Thou dost love all that exist.

From the book of Wisdom

Lord, all the earth is before Thee
as a speck of dust on the scales,
as an early dewdrop falling down to earth.
But Thou dost have mercy on all,
for Thou art able to do all things;
and Thou takest no notice of the sins of men,
that they may come to repentance.
For Thou dost love all that exist,
and abhor none of that which Thou hast created;
for would Thou hate anything, Thou wouldst not have created it.

How could anything continue to exist against thy will,
how could preserve what Thou hast not made?
Yea, all things do Thou spare, for all things are thine,
and Thou dost reign full of love over all that lives!

Thy imperishable spirit is present in all that exists.
Therefore Thou dost punish sinners in moderation,
and remind them warningly of their sins,
that they may forsake their wickedness
and remain faithful to Thee, Lord.

Brothers and sisters,

Again and again we pray to our God,
that He may make you worthy of his calling
and all your good intentions and every act of your faith
with power to perfection.
Then the Name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you

by the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.

However, we must beseech you, brothers and sisters,
in connection with the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
and our reunion with Him
not to lose your reflection so soon.
Do not be alarmed
by prophecies or statements or a letter
supposedly coming from us, claiming
that the day of the Lord has arrived.

GOSPEL       Lk. 19, 1-10

The Son of Man came to seek and save what was lost.

From the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

At that time, Jesus entered Jericho.
As He passed through it,
a certain Zacchaeus,
chief toll collector and a rich man,
wanted to see who Jesus was.
But he did not succeed because of the crowd,
for he was small in stature.
To see Him anyway he ran hard ahead
and climbed a wild fig tree
because Jesus would pass by there.

When Jesus came to that place
He looked up and said to him:
“Zacchaeus, come down quickly,
for today I must be a guest in your house.”
Zacchaeus came down quickly and received Him full of joy.
All saw this and noted morosely:
“He has gone to take up residence with a sinner!”

But Zacchaeus stepped up to the Lord and spoke:
“Lord, by this I donate half my property to the poor ;
and if I have extorted anything from anyone
I will give it back to him fourfold.”

Jesus spoke to him:
“Today salvation has come to this house ,
for this man too is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man has come to seek
and to save what was lost.”

On caring for the common home

220. This conversion involves several attitudes that go together to initiate generous and loving care. In the first place, it implies gratitude and disinterestedness, that is, a recognition of the world as a gift received from the Father’s love, a recognition that brings as a consequence a disinterested willingness to renounce and generous gestures, even if no one sees or acknowledges them: “Let not your left hand know what your right hand does … and your Father who sees in secret will repay it to you” (Mt 6:3-4) . It also implies the loving awareness that one is not separate from other creatures, but forms a magnificent universal communion with the other beings of the universe. For a believer, one does not look at the world from outside, but from within, recognising the bonds by which the Father has united us with all beings. Moreover, because ecological conversion grows the special capacities God has given each believer, it leads him to develop his creativity and enthusiasm to solve the world’s dramas, offering himself to God “as a living, holy sacrifice” (Rom. 12, 1) . He interprets his own superiority not as a reason for personal glory or irresponsible domination, but as another capacity that in turn imposes on him a heavy responsibility stemming from his faith.
