Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Aan het kind Jezus worden alle voorschriften van de Wet van Mozes voltrokken. Simeon belichaamt de hoop en het vertrouwen van dit volk dat God zal komen, en vertroosting zal brengen doorheen zijn Gezalfde. In Jezus, het kind van eenvoudige mensen, ‘ziet’ Simeon dat God zijn woord houdt. Jezus is degene in wie God heil en redding brengt, bij zijn eigen volk en voor alle mensen. In Jezus breekt het licht van God door. De hemel straalt en de aarde jubelt (Ps 96). Ook Simeon looft God. Maar tegenover Jezus kan men niet neutraal blijven. Wie Hem aanvaard en in Hem gelooft, moet ook leven en liefhebben zoals Hij. Pas dan kent men God en is men in het licht. Dan staan wij op ten leven.

Wie zijn broeder liefheeft, blijft in het licht.
Uit de eerste brief van de heilige apostel Johannes
Vrienden,
Hoe weten wij dat wij God kennen ?
Er is maar één bewijs :
Dat we ons houden aan zijn geboden.
Wie zegt dat hij Hem kent
maar zich niet stoort aan zijn geboden
is een leugenaar ;
in zo iemand woont de waarheid niet.
Maar in een mens die gehoorzaam is aan Gods woord
heeft zijn liefde werkelijk haar volmaaktheid bereikt ;
dan weten we zeker dat we ‘in Hem’ zijn.
Wie aanspraak maakt op verbondenheid met God
moet leven juist zoals Christus geleefd heeft.
Vrienden,
ik leg u geen nieuw gebod op.
Het is het oude gebod dat gij altijd gehad hebt ;
het is de boodschap die gij vanaf het begin hebt gehoord.
Toch is het ook weer een nieuw gebod
en dat geldt van Christus maar ook van u :
Want de duisternis gaat voorbij
en het waarachtige licht schijnt reeds.
Wie zegt in het licht te zijn maar zijn broeder haat
die is nog steeds in duisternis.
Wie zijn broeder liefheeft
blijft in het licht
en hij komt niet ten val.
Maar wie zijn broeder haat
is in duisternis.
Hij tast in het donker
en hij weet niet waarheen zijn weg hem voert,
want de duisternis heeft hem blind gemaakt.

De hemel straalt en de aarde jubelt.
Zingt voor de Heer een nieuw gezang,
zingt voor de Heer, alle landen.
Zingt voor de Heer en verheerlijkt zijn Naam.

Hij is de schepper van het heelal.

Een licht dat voor de heidenen straalt.
Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Lucas
Toen de tijd aanbrak
waarop Maria en het Kind volgens de Wet van Mozes
gereinigd moesten worden,
brachten zijn ouders Jezus naar Jeruzalem
om Hem aan de Heer op te dragen,
volgens het voorschrift van de Wet des Heren :
Elke eerstgeborene van het mannelijk geslacht
moet aan de Heer worden toegeheiligd,
en om volgens de bepaling van de Wet des Heren
een offer te brengen,
namelijk een koppel tortels of twee jonge duiven.
Nu leefde er in Jeruzalem een zekere Simeon,
een wetgetrouw en vroom man
die Israëls vertroosting verwachtte,
en de heilige Geest rustte op hem.
Hij had een godsspraak ontvangen van de heilige Geest
dat de dood hem niet zou treffen
voordat hij de Gezalfde des Heren zou hebben aanschouwd.
Door de Geest gedreven was hij naar de tempel gekomen.
Toen de ouders het kind Jezus daar binnenbrachten
om aan Hem het voorschrift der Wet te vervullen,
nam ook hij het kind in zijn armen
en verkondigde Gods lof met de woorden :
“Uw dienaar laat Gij, Heer, nu naar uw woord in vrede gaan :
Mijn ogen hebben thans uw Heil aanschouwd
dat Gij voor alle volken hebt bereid;
een licht dat voor de heidenen straalt,
een glorie voor uw volk Israël.”
Zijn vader en moeder stonden verbaasd
over wat van Hem gezegd werd.
Daarop sprak Simeon over hen een zegen uit
en hij zei tot Maria, zijn moeder :
“Zie, dit kind is bestemd tot val of opstanding van velen in Israël,
tot een teken dat weersproken wordt,
opdat de gezindheid van vele harten openbaar moge worden ;
en uw eigen ziel zal door een zwaard worden doorboord.”

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis
151. Het is noodzakelijk te zorgen voor de publieke ruimten, de perspectivische kaders en stedenbouwkundige referentiepunten die ons gevoel van verbondenheid, onze beleving van verworteling, ons “zich thuis voelen” binnen de stad die ons bevat en verenigt, versterken. Het is belangrijk dat de verschillende delen van een stad goed geïntegreerd zijn en dat de bewoners een algemeen overzicht kunnen hebben in plaats van zich op te sluiten in een wijk en zo ervan afzien de hele stad te beleven als een eigen ruimte die met anderen wordt gedeeld. Iedere ingreep in het stedelijke of platteland zou rekening ermee moeten houden hoe de verschillende elementen van de plaats een geheel vormen dat door de bewoners wordt ervaren als een kader dat coherent is aan de rijkdom aan betekenissen ervan. Zo houdt de ander op een vreemdeling te zijn en kan men hem zien als een deel van een “ons” dat wij samen vormen. Om deze reden is het zowel in de stedelijke als de plattelandsomgeving opportuun enkel ruimtes te reserveren waar menselijke ingrepen, die deze voortdurend veranderen, worden vermeden.

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with you the joy of the Gospel.
Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience this joy by opening his heart
to the healing effect of God’s word.
Available every morning from 7 am
Consideration
To the child Jesus all the precepts of the Law of Moses are fulfilled. Simeon embodies the hope and trust of this people that God will come, and bring comfort through his Anointed One. In Jesus, the child of simple people, Simeon ‘sees’ that God keeps his word. Jesus is the one in whom God brings salvation and redemption, to his own people and to all people. In Jesus, the light of God breaks through. The heavens shine and the earth shines with joy (Ps 96). Simeon also praises God. But one cannot remain neutral towards Jesus. Whoever accepts Him and believes in Him, must also live and love like Him. Only then one knows God and is in the light. Then we rise to life.

He who loves his brother remains in the light.

My friends,
How do we know that we know God?
There is only one proof :
That we keep His commandments.
Who says he knows Him
but does not keep his commandments
is a liar;
the truth does not dwell in such a person.
But in a man who is obedient to God’s word
his love has truly reached its perfection ;
then we know for sure that we are ‘in Him’.
Whoever claims union with God
must live just as Christ lived.
Friends,
I am not imposing a new commandment on you.
It is the old commandment that you have always had ;
it is the message that you have heard from the beginning.
Yet it is also a new commandment
and that applies to Christ but also to you :
For the darkness is passing away
and the true light already shines.
He who claims to be in the light but hates his brother
he is still in darkness.
He who loves his brother
remains in the light
and he will not fall.
But he who hates his brother
is in darkness.
He gropes in the darkness
and he knoweth not whither his way leadeth,
for the darkness has blinded him.

A light shining for the Gentiles.
From the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
Luke
When the time came for Mary and the Child, according to the Law of Moses,
had to be cleansed,
his parents took Jesus to Jerusalem
to dedicate Him to the Lord,
according to the precept of the Lord’s Law:
Every first-born male child
must be consecrated to the Lord,
and to bring a sacrifice according to the provision of the Lord,
namely a pair of turtles or two young pigeons.
Now there lived in Jerusalem a certain Simeon,
a law-abiding and devout man
who expected the consolation of Israel,
and the Holy Spirit rested upon him.
He had received a divine word from the Holy Spirit
that death would not come upon him
until he had seen the Lord’s anointed.
Driven by the Spirit, he had come to the temple.
When the parents brought the child Jesus into the temple to fulfil the commandment of the Law,
he too took the child in his arms
and proclaimed God’s praise with the words :
“Thy servant, O Lord, wilt thou now go in peace, according to thy word:
My eyes have now beheld thy salvation
which Thou hast prepared for all nations;
a light that shines for the Gentiles,
a glory to thy people Israel.”
His father and mother were amazed at what was said of Him.
Then Simeon pronounced a blessing on them
and he said to Mary, his mother :
“Behold, this child is destined to be the fall or the resurrection of many in Israel,
to be a sign that is refuted,
so that the disposition of many hearts may be made manifest ;
and your own soul shall be pierced by a sword.”

On Care of the Common Home
151. There is also a need to protect those common areas, visual landmarks and urban landscapes which increase our sense of belonging, of rootedness, of “feeling at home” within a city which includes us and brings us together. It is important that the different parts of a city be well integrated and that those who live there have a sense of the whole, rather than being confined to one neighbourhood and failing to see the larger city as space which they share with others. Interventions which affect the urban or rural landscape should take into account how various elements combine to form a whole which is perceived by its inhabitants as a coherent and meaningful framework for their lives. Others will then no longer be seen as strangers, but as part of a “we” which all of us are working to create. For this same reason, in both urban and rural settings, it is helpful to set aside some places which can be preserved and protected from constant changes brought by human intervention.
