Consideración
Seguir a Cristo es seguirlo en su amor y entrega total al Padre, y en su entrega a sus semejantes. Esta parte del Evangelio expresa para nosotros lo que es esencialmente cristiano. Ha sido una tentación peligrosa y ancestral para los cristianos separar estos dos aspectos. Después de todo, deberían estar inextricablemente unidos. El amor al prójimo sin amor a Dios es puro humanismo. El amor a Dios sin amor al prójimo es un insulto a Dios, para quien cada ser humano es único. Si mantenemos ese equilibrio, tal vez las palabras que se nos dirijan sean: No estás lejos del reino de Dios.

PRIMERA LECTURA             Oseas 14:2-10
Ya no diremos a la obra de nuestras manos: «¡Tú eres nuestro dios!»

Así dice el Señor:
«Vuelve, oh Israel, al Señor tu Dios,
porque has tropezado con tu culpa.
«Ven con tus palabras como un regalo,

Tú perdonas toda culpa;

«Maestro, has dicho la verdad:

Sobre la fraternidad y la amistad social

231. A menudo hay una gran necesidad de negociar y, por lo tanto, de desarrollar
caminos concretos hacia la paz. Sin embargo, los procesos reales de
paz sostenible son principalmente cambios trabajados por los pueblos,
en los que cada persona, con su estilo de vida cotidiano, puede ser una verdadera
levadura. Los grandes cambios no se producen detrás de un escritorio o en
un estudio. Por eso «todos desempeñan un papel fundamental en
un proyecto creativo para escribir una nueva página en la historia,
una página llena de esperanza, llena de paz, llena de reconciliación».
Existe una «arquitectura» de paz en la que las diversas instituciones de la sociedad
contribuyen cada una según sus propias competencias,
pero también hay una «elaboración artesanal» de la paz en la que todos
estamos involucrados.
Basándonos en los diversos procesos de paz que se están desarrollando en
diferentes partes del mundo, «hemos aprendido que
estas formas de establecer la paz, de la primacía de la razón sobre la
venganza, de una delicada armonía entre la política y la justicia, no pueden
ignorar la participación de la gente. El diseño de marcos normativos
y acuerdos institucionales entre grupos políticos y económicos
de buena voluntad no es suficiente. […] Además, siempre es valioso
incluir la experiencia de sectores que a menudo han sido invisibilizados
en nuestros procesos de paz, para que sean precisamente las
comunidades las que colorean los procesos de la memoria colectiva.

Consideration
To follow Christ is to follow Him in His total love and surrender to the Father, and in His self-giving to His fellow man. This part of the gospel expresses for us what is essentially Christian. It has been a dangerous and age-old temptation for Christians to separate these two. After all, they should be inextricably linked. Love of neighbour without love of God is pure humanism. Love of God without love of neighbour is an insult to God, for whom every human being is unique. If we keep that balance, perhaps the words addressed to us will be: You are not far from the kingdom of God.

FIRST READING Hos. 14:2-10

We will no longer say to the work of our hands, ‘You are our gods!’

From the Prophet Hosea

Thus says the Lord:
“Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
for you have stumbled over your guilt.
‘Come with your words as a gift,

accept also our good will:

On fraternity and social friendship

231. Often there is a great need to negotiate and thus develop concrete
paths to peace. However, the actual processes of
sustainable peace are mainly changes worked by peoples,
where each person, with their daily lifestyle, can be a real
leaven. Big changes do not come about behind a desk or in
a study. That is why ‘everyone plays a fundamental role in
a creative project to write a new page in history,
a page full of hope, full of peace, full of reconciliation’.
There is an ‘architecture’ of peace in which the various
institutions of society each contribute according to their own competencies,
but there is also a ‘handcrafting’ of peace in which we are all involved.
Based on the various peace processes that are developing in
different parts of the world, ‘we have learned that
these ways of establishing peace, of the primacy of reason over
revenge, of a delicate harmony between politics and justice,
cannot ignore the involvement of the people. The design of normative
frameworks and institutional agreements between political and economic
groups of good will is not enough. […] Moreover, it is always valuable
to include the experience of sectors that have often been made invisible
in our peace processes, so that it is precisely the
communities that colour the processes of the collective memory.

Consideración
«Escucha hoy la voz del Señor y no te obstines». Así reza el estribillo del salmo responsorial. El Salmo 95 se refiere principalmente al desierto y a la falta de voluntad del pueblo. Este tema no solo caracteriza el viaje a través del desierto, sino que también es retomado repetidamente por los profetas, como Jeremías hoy: «Persisten en su maldad». Jesús retoma repetidamente este reproche. La gente no escucha, no ve las señales, no está abierta.
Ahora también se nos pregunta: «¿Estás abierto a lo que el Espíritu de Dios susurra a tu corazón?

PRIMERA LECTURA             Jer. 7:23-28
Este es un pueblo que se niega a escuchar al Señor.

230. El desafío de superar las divisiones respetando las diferencias
es hacer que cada individuo se sienta parte de algo más grande.
Porque «nuestra sociedad florecerá
cuando cada persona, cada grupo social, se sienta verdaderamente en casa.
En una familia, los padres, los abuelos y los hijos están en casa; nadie está excluido.
Si alguien tiene un problema, aunque sea grave, aunque “”se lo haya
buscado””, los demás acuden en su ayuda, le apoyan;
su dolor es compartido por todos. […] En las familias, todos contribuyen al
proyecto común, todos trabajan por el bien común,
pero sin destruir al individuo; al contrario, lo apoyan
y lo sostienen. Discuten, pero una cosa nunca cambia: el
vínculo familiar. A las discusiones en la familia les sigue la reconciliación. Todos
comparten las alegrías y las penas de los demás. ¡Eso es la familia! Si tan solo
pudiéramos lograr mirar a nuestros adversarios políticos o a nuestros
vecinos con los mismos ojos con los que miramos a nuestros hijos,
esposas, maridos, padres y madres. ¡Qué maravilloso sería!
¿Amamos a nuestra sociedad o sigue siendo algo muy alejado de nosotros,
algo anónimo en lo que no tenemos participación, que no nos afecta, que no es
obligados a ella?

‘Today, listen to the voice of the Lord and do not be stubborn.’ So goes the refrain of the response psalm. Psalm 95 primarily refers to the desert and the unwillingness of the people. This theme not only characterises the desert journey, but is also taken up repeatedly by the prophets, such as Jeremiah today: ‘They persist in their evil’. Jesus repeatedly takes up this reproach. People do not listen, they do not see the signs, they are not open. NOW we too are asked: ‘Are you open to what God’s Spirit whispers in your heart?

FIRST READING              Jer. 7:23-28
This is a people who will not listen to the Lord, their God.

On fraternity and social friendship

230. The challenge of overcoming what divides us, without losing
of each person without losing their identity, requires that all persons
maintain a fundamental sense of belonging. For ‘our society will flourish
when every person and social group feels truly at home. In a
family, there are parents, grandparents and children, all at home, none excluded.
If someone is experiencing a problem, no matter how serious, even if ’he or she
asked for it’, the others come to his aid and support him;
his grief is shared by all. […] In families, everyone contributes to the
common project and everyone works for the common
good, but without destroying the individual; on the contrary, they contribute to
and support him. They argue, but one thing does not change: the
family ties. Family arguments are followed by reconciliation. Everyone
shares each other’s joys and sorrows. That is what being a family is all about! If only
we could manage to look at our political opponents or our neighbours
with the same eyes we use to look at our children,
wives, husbands, fathers and mothers. How wonderful that would be!
Do we love our society or does it remain something far removed from us,
something anonymous in which we have no stake, that does not affect us, does not
obligate us?

Consideración
La expresión judía «Ley y Profetas» se refiere a todo el Antiguo Testamento. Cuando los judíos hablan de la Ley (la Torá), generalmente se refieren a los cinco libros de Moisés (el Pentateuco); para los judíos, la sección de las Escrituras llamada «Profetas» incluye no solo los libros que llevan el nombre de los profetas, sino también los libros históricos en los que aparecen los profetas. Está claro que Jesús no podía pretender que su mensaje fuera en contra del profundo significado del Antiguo Testamento.

de manera proactiva «dando forma a una nueva sociedad
basada en el servicio a los demás y no en el deseo de
dominar; una sociedad basada en compartir con los demás
lo que uno posee en lugar de en la lucha egoísta de cada individuo por
acumular la mayor riqueza posible; una sociedad en la que el valor de
estar juntos como personas es ciertamente más importante que cualquier pequeño grupo
, ya sea la familia, la nación, el grupo étnico o la cultura». 213
Los obispos de Corea del Sur han hecho hincapié en que la auténtica
paz «solo puede lograrse si luchamos por la justicia a través del diálogo y

Consideration
The Jewish expression ‘Law and Prophets’ refers to the entire Old Testament. When Jews speak of the Law (the Torah), they generally mean the five books of Moses (the Pentateuch); for Jews, the section of Scripture called ‘Prophets’ includes not only the books named after prophets, but also the historical books in which prophets appear. It is clear that Jesus could not possibly claim that his message would go against the deep meaning of the Old Testament.

In those days Moses spoke to the people:
‘Listen then, O Israel,

229. As the bishops of South Africa have taught, reconciliation is achieved
proactively ’by shaping a new society
based on service to others rather than the desire to
to dominate; a society based on sharing with others
what one possesses instead of on the selfish struggle of each individual to
accumulate the greatest possible wealth; a society in which the value of
being together as people is certainly more important than any small group,
whether that be the family, the nation, the ethnic group or the culture’.
The bishops of South Korea have emphasised that authentic
peace “can only be achieved if we fight for justice through dialogue and
strive for reconciliation and mutual development”.

Consideración
El pasaje sobre la visita del ángel Gabriel a María tiene todas las características de una historia de vocación. La iniciativa viene de Dios; hay un saludo con la promesa de la cercanía de Dios; María recibe un nuevo nombre que expresa su misión: «la agraciada». En Cristo, Dios nos liberará del pecado y compartiremos la gloria de su vida divina. El sí de María es la verdadera libertad. ¿Podemos entregarnos al mensaje de Jesús con el mismo sí?

La arquitectura y el arte de la paz
228. El camino de la paz no exige la homogeneización de la
sociedad, pero sí permite cooperar con los demás. Puede
unir a muchos en la búsqueda de objetivos compartidos que beneficien a todos.
Ante un determinado objetivo común,
se pueden ofrecer diferentes propuestas técnicas y diversas experiencias
que sirvan al bien general. Es necesario correctamente los problemas que experimenta
una sociedad para aceptar que existen diferentes formas de
ver y resolver las dificultades. El camino hacia una
sociedad mejor siempre nos obliga a reconocer la posibilidad de que la
otra persona, al menos parcialmente, presente una perspectiva legítima, algo
que se puede tener en cuenta, aunque haya cometido un error o
actuado de forma incorrecta. Después de todo, «nunca se debe etiquetar a la otra persona
por lo que haya dicho o hecho, sino que se debe valorar
en función de la promesa que lleva dentro», una promesa que
siempre deja un rayo de esperanza.

Consideration
The passage about the visit of the angel Gabriel to Mary has all the characteristics of a vocation story. The initiative comes from God; there is a greeting with the promise of God’s nearness; Mary actually receives a new name that expresses her mission: ‘the Graced One’. In Christ, God will free us from sin, and we will share in the glory of his divine life. Mary’s yes is true freedom. Can we surrender to Jesus‘ message with the same yes?

FIRST READING              Isaiah 7:10-14
’The virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel,‘ says the Lord.

From Isaiah

In those days Isaiah the prophet spoke to Ahaz, saying:
’Ask the Lord your God for a sign
whether high in the heavens or deep in the underworld.‘

I will not put the Lord to the test.‘

The architecture and the craft of peace
228. The path to peace does not demand the homogenisation of
society, but it does enable us to cooperate with one another. It can
unite many in the pursuit of shared objectives beneficial to all.
Faced with a certain common
goal, different technical proposals and various experiences can be
offered that serve the general good. It is necessary
that people try to properly identify the problems a society is experiencing
in order to accept that there are different ways of
looking at and solving the difficulties. The road to a
better society always requires us to recognise the possibility that the
other person – at least partially – presents a legitimate perspective, something
that can be taken into account, even if they may have made a mistake or
acted wrongly. After all, ‘one should never label the other person
for what they may have said or done, but they should be valued
on the basis of the promise he carries within him’, a promise that
always leaves a glimmer of hope.

Consideración
Jesús llega a su ciudad natal, Nazaret, pero sus conciudadanos lo echan de la ciudad e incluso quieren matarlo. Jesús dice que ningún profeta es aceptado en su propia ciudad natal. Esta es una reprimenda muy dura y se ve reforzada por la referencia a Elías y Naamán, donde la salvación se extendió a los gentiles. Al mismo tiempo, nos acercamos a la gran decisión de la Semana Santa, pero también al mensaje universal del cristianismo que está destinado a todos: Dios no se dirige solo a los miembros de Israel, sino a todos los que creen en sus signos.

era un hombre muy honorable a sus propios ojos y muy respetado por su amo,
porque por medio de él Dios el Señor había traído la liberación a Aram.
Era un gran soldado,
pero el hombre sufría de una enfermedad de la piel.
Ahora bien, las bandas arameas habían
llevado a cabo una incursión en Israel
y en el proceso capturaron a una joven;
ahora estaba al servicio de la esposa de Naamán.
Ella le dijo a su señora:
«Ay, si mi señor pudiera ir al profeta
que vive en Samaria,
él lo libraría de su enfermedad».
Naamán fue a contar a su señor
lo que la muchacha de Israel había dicho.
Entonces el rey de Aram dijo:
«Ve allí;
te daré una carta para el rey de Israel».

Partió, llevando consigo diez talentos de plata,
seis mil siclos de oro y diez túnicas de fiesta,
y se presentó con la carta ante el rey de Israel.
Decía así:
«Os envío a mi siervo Naamán con esta carta;
os pido que le curéis su enfermedad de la piel».

Entonces Naamán se puso en camino con sus caballos y su carro
y se detuvo ante la casa de Eliseo.
Eliseo envió un mensajero para decirle:
«Ve siete veces al Jordán,
y tu piel se restaurará y estarás limpio».
Entonces Naamán se enfadó y se fue.
Dijo:
«Yo había pensado
Saldrá y se pondrá delante de mí.
Entonces invocará el nombre del Señor su Dios,

entró en la casa,
se puso delante de él y dijo:
«Ahora sé que solo hay un Dios en Israel

que se empañe la otra. […] De hecho, la verdad no debe conducir a la
venganza, sino a la reconciliación y al perdón. La verdad es
decir a las familias afligidas lo que les sucedió a sus familiares desaparecidos.
La verdad es confesar lo que les sucedió a los menores
reclutados por los autores de la violencia. La verdad es reconocer el dolor
de las mujeres que han sido víctimas de la violencia y el
abuso. […] Cada acto de violencia cometido contra un ser humano es una herida en
la carne de la humanidad; cada muerte violenta nos «hace»
«menos» personas. […] La violencia causa violencia, el odio engendra odio
y la muerte conduce a otra muerte. Debemos romper esta cadena que

Jesus comes to his hometown of Nazareth, but his own fellow citizens drive him out of the city and even want to kill him. Jesus says that no prophet is accepted in his own hometown. This is a very sharp rebuke and it is reinforced by the reference to Elijah and Naaman, where salvation went out to the Gentiles. At the same time, we are approaching the big decision of Holy Week, but also the universal message of Christianity that is intended for all: God does not only address the members of Israel, but everyone who believes in his signs.

FIRST READING             2 Kings 5:1-15a
There were many lepers in Israel, yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian.

From the second book of Kings

In those days Naaman,
captain of the host of the king of Aram,
was a very honourable man in his own eyes, and highly regarded by his master,
for through him God the Lord had brought deliverance to Aram.
He was a great soldier,
but the man suffered from a skin disease.
Now Aramean bands had once
undertaken a raid in Israel
and in the process captured a young girl;
she was now in the service of Naaman’s wife.
She said to her mistress:
‘Oh, if only my lord could go to the prophet
who lives in Samaria,
he would rid him of his disease.”
Na’aman went to tell his lord
what the girl from Israel had said.
Then the king of Aram said:
‘Go there;
I will give you a letter for the king of Israel.’

He set off, taking with him ten talents of silver,
six thousand shekels of gold and ten festive robes,
and presented himself with the letter to the king of Israel.
It read:
‘I am sending my servant Naaman to you with this letter;
I ask you to heal him of his skin disease.‘
As soon as the king of Israel had read the letter,
he tore his clothes and said:
’Am I God, with power over life and death,
that he should send someone to me
whose skin disease I should heal?
‘Mark my words:
‘He is trying to start a fight with me.’‘
When Elisha the man of God
heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes,
he sent word to the king:
’Why have you torn your clothes?
Send him to me.
Then he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.’
Then Naaman went on his way with his horses and chariot
and stopped before the house of Elisha.
Elisha sent a messenger to say to him:
‘Go seven times over to the Jordan,
and your skin will be restored and you will be clean.
Then Naaman became angry and went away.
He said:
’I had thought
He will come out and stand before me.
‘Then he will call on the name of the Lord his God,
and put his hand over the spot and cure me of my disease.
’Are not the Abana and the Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus,
better than all the waters of Israel?
“Can I not wash in them and be clean?’
He turned around and indignantly left.
But his servants went to him and said:
‘Father, suppose the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult,
would you not have done it?
’So why not do what he says and wash
to be made clean?’
Then he went to the Jordan and immersed himself seven times,
as the man of God had said.
His skin became like that of a small child again
and he was cleansed.
He returned with all his entourage to the man of God,
entered the house,
stood before him and said:
“Now I know that there is only one God in Israel,
and nowhere else on earth.’

Like Elijah and Elisha, Jesus is not only sent to the Israelites.

When Jesus came to Nazareth,
he said to the people in the synagogue:
‘Truly I tell you,
no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
’And what I say to you is true:
In the days of Elijah,
when the heavens remained shut for three years and six months
and a great famine came over the entire land,
there were many widows in Israel;
yet Elijah was not sent to any of them
except to a widow at Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
“And in the time of Elisha the prophet
there were many lepers in Israel;
yet not one of them was cleansed,
except Naaman the Syrian.”
When they heard this
all who were in the synagogue were filled with rage.
They jumped to their feet
and rushed out
and chased him
to the brow of the hill on which their town was built
in order to throw him off the cliff.
But he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.

227. Indeed ‘truth is an inseparable companion of
justice and mercy. All three together are essential
for building peace and, on the other hand, each prevents
the others from being compromised. […] In fact, truth should not lead to
revenge, but rather to reconciliation and forgiveness. Truth is to tell the families affected by
grief-stricken families to tell what happened to their disappeared
family members. Truth is confessing what happened to the minors
recruited by the perpetrators of violence. Truth is acknowledging the pain
acknowledging the pain of the women who have been victims of violence and
abuse. […] Every violence committed against a human being is a wound in
the flesh of humanity; every violent death ‘makes’ us
‘less’ as persons. […] Violence begets violence, hatred begets hatred
forth and death leads to another death. We must break this chain that
seems inescapable, break it’.
