Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?

Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Openingswoord

Veertig dagen lang gaan we op weg naar Pasen.
De Heilige Geest zal ons leiden,
zoals Hij Jezus naar de woestijn leidde
om daar op de proef gesteld te worden.
Het was een proefperiode van veertig dagen.
Jezus kon volhouden en engelen dienden Hem.
Daarna brak een nieuw tijdperk aan
Waarin Hij het Rijk Gods aankondigde.
Moge de veertigdagentijd voor ons
een tijd van herbronning en vernieuwing zijn.
Laten we ingaan op de oproep
tot inkeer en ommekeer.

 

EERSTE LEZING                     Gen. 9, 8-15

Het verbond van God met Noach,
die gespaard bleef van de wateren van de zondvloed.

Uit het Boek Genesis

Dit zei God tot Noach en zijn kinderen:
“Nu ga Ik mijn verbond aan met u en met uw nageslacht
en met alle levende wezens die bij u zijn,
met de vogels en de viervoetige dieren,
met alle dieren van de aarde die bij u zijn,
met al wat uit de ark is gekomen,
al het gedierte van de aarde.
“Ik ga met u een verbond aan
dat nooit meer enig levend wezen
door het water van de vloed zal worden uitgeroeid
en dat er zich nooit meer
een vloed zal voordoen om de aarde te verwoesten.”

En God zei:
“Dit is het teken van het verbond
dat Ik instel tussen Mij en u
en alle levende wezens die bij u zijn,
voor alle geslachten.

“Ik zet mijn boog in de wolken;
die zal het teken zijn van het verbond
tussen Mij en de aarde.

“Wanneer Ik op de aarde de wolken samenpak
en de boog in de wolken zichtbaar wordt,
dan zal Ik denken aan het verbond
tussen Mij en u en alle levende wezens;
alles wat leven heeft.
“De wateren zullen nooit meer zwellen
tot een vloed om al wat leeft te verdelgen.

De wegen van God zijn goed en betrouwbaar.

TWEEDE LEZING             1 Petr. 3, 18-22

Gij zijt door het doopsel gelijkvormig geworden aan Christus.

Uit de eerste brief van de heilige apostel Petrus

Dierbaren,

Christus is
eens en voor al
gestorven voor de zonden
-de Rechtvaardige voor de onrechtvaardigen –
om ons tot God te brengen.
Gedood naar het vlees
werd Hij ten leven gewekt naar de geest.
Zo ging Hij heen en predikte voor de geesten in de kerker,
die eertijds, in de dagen dat Noach de ark bouwde,
weerspannig waren geweest,
terwijl God in zijn lankmoedigheid geduld oefende.
In de ark bleven slechts enkelen, niet meer dan acht personen,
behouden te midden van het water.

Dit was een voorafbeelding van het doopwater
waardoor gij nu gered wordt.
De doop beoogt niet de verwijdering van lichamelijke onreinheid
maar de verbintenis met God van een goed  geweten,
krachtens de opstanding van Jezus Christus
die, ten hemel gevaren, zetelt aan Gods rechterhand,
nadat engelen en machten en krachten
aan Hem onderworpen zijn.

Niet van brood alleen leeft de mens
maar van ieder woord dat uit de mond van God voortkomt.

Hij werd door de satan op de proef gesteld

Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Marcus

In die tijd dreef de Geest Jezus naar de woestijn.
Veertig dagen bracht Hij in de woestijn door,
terwijl Hij door de satan op de proef werd gesteld.
Hij verbleef bij de wilde dieren
en de engelen bewezen Hem hun diensten.

Nadat Johannes was gevangen genomen,
ging Jezus naar Galilea
en verkondigde Gods Blijde Boodschap.
Hij zei:
“De tijd is vervuld en het Rijk Gods is nabij;
bekeert u en gelooft in de Blijde Boodschap.”

PAUS FRANCISCUS

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis
201. Het merendeel van de bewoners van de planeet verklaart zich gelovig en dat zou de godsdiensten ertoe moeten aanzetten met elkaar in een dialoog te treden die gericht is op de zorg voor de natuur, de bescherming van de armen, het bouwen aan een netwerk van respect en broederschap. Ook is een dialoog tussen de wetenschappen zelf onontbeerlijk, daar elk gewoon is zich op te sluiten binnen de grenzen van het eigen taalgebruik en specialisatie ertoe neigt isolement en verabsolutering van eigen kennis te worden. Dit verhindert op een adequate wijze de problemen van het milieu aan te pakken. Evenzo wordt een open en respectvolle dialoog noodzakelijk tussen de verschillende ecologische bewegingen, waar het niet ontbreekt aan ideologische strijd. De ernst van de ecologische crisis eist van ons allen dat wij denken aan het algemeen welzijn en verder gaan op de weg van de dialoog, die om geduld, ascese en edelmoedigheid vraagt, eraan denkend dat “de werkelijkheid belangrijker is dan het idee”.

Esta invitación quiere compartir contigo la alegría
del Evangelio. Todos, sin excepción,

Palabra de apertura

Durante cuarenta días, nos acercamos a la Pascua.
El Espíritu Santo nos guiará,
como llevó a Jesús al desierto
para ser probado allí.
Fue una prueba de cuarenta días.

La alianza de Dios con Noé,

que antes, en los días en que Noé construyó el arca,

mientras que Dios en su longanimidad ejerció la paciencia.
En el arca, sólo unos pocos, no más de ocho personas, permanecieron
preservadas en medio del agua.

Esto fue un presagio del agua bautismal
por la que ahora os salváis.

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común
201. La mayoría de los habitantes del planeta se declaran religiosos, y esto debería animar a las religiones a entablar entre sí un diálogo orientado al cuidado de la naturaleza, a la protección de los pobres, a la construcción de una red de respeto y fraternidad. También es indispensable el diálogo entre las propias ciencias, ya que cada una está acostumbrada a encerrarse en los límites de su propio lenguaje y la especialización tiende a convertirse en aislamiento y absolutización de sus propios conocimientos. Esto impide abordar adecuadamente los problemas del entorno. Del mismo modo, se hace necesario un diálogo abierto y respetuoso entre los distintos movimientos ecologistas, en el que no falte la lucha ideológica. La gravedad de la crisis ecológica nos exige a todos pensar en el bien común y seguir por el camino del diálogo, que exige paciencia, ascetismo y generosidad, recordando que “la realidad es más importante que la idea”.

For forty days, we are moving towards Easter.
The Holy Spirit will lead us,
as He led Jesus into the desert
to be tested there.
It was a forty-day trial.
Jesus was able to persevere and angels served Him.
Then a new era dawned
In which He announced the Kingdom of God.
May Lent be for us
be a time of revival and renewal.
Let us respond to the call
to repentance and reversal.

 

FIRST READING                 Gen 9:8-15

God’s covenant with Noah,
who was spared from the waters of the flood.

From the Book of Genesis

This God said to Noah and his children:
“Now I make My covenant with you and with your descendants
and with all living creatures that are with you,
with the birds and the four-footed beasts,
with all the beasts of the earth that are with you,
with all that came out of the ark,
all the beasts of the earth.
“I make a covenant with you
That never again will any living creature
shall be exterminated by the waters of the flood
and that never again
a flood shall arise to destroy the earth.”

And God said:
“This is the sign of the covenant
which I am instituting between Me and you
and all living creatures that are with you,
for all generations.

“I set My bow in the clouds ;

You have been conformed to Christ through baptism.

Dearly beloved,

Christ is
once and for all
died for sins
-the Just for the unjust –
to bring us to God.
Slain according to the flesh
He was raised to life according to the spirit.
So He went and preached to the spirits in the dungeon,
who before, in the days when Noah built the ark,
had been recalcitrant,
while God in His longsuffering exercised patience.
In the ark, only a few, no more than eight people, remained
preserved in the midst of the water.

This was a foreshadowing of the baptismal water
by which ye are now saved.
Baptism does not aim at the removal of physical uncleanness
but the union with God of a good conscience,
by virtue of the resurrection of Jesus Christ
who, having ascended into heaven, sits at God’s right hand,
after angels and powers and forces
are subject to Him.

POPE FRANCISCUS

On caring for the common home
201. The majority of the planet’s inhabitants declare themselves to be religious, and this should encourage religions to enter into a dialogue with each other aimed at caring for nature, protecting the poor, building a network of respect and fraternity. Dialogue between the sciences themselves is also indispensable, as each is used to confining itself within the limits of its own language and specialisation tends to become isolation and absolutisation of its own knowledge. This prevents the problems of the environment from being adequately addressed. Similarly, an open and respectful dialogue becomes necessary between the different ecological movements, where there is no lack of ideological struggle. The gravity of the ecological crisis demands all of us to think of the common good and continue along the path of dialogue, which calls for patience, asceticism and generosity, remembering that “reality is more important than the idea”.

Consideration
El arrepentimiento y la alegría van de la mano. Tenemos que arrepentirnos y celebrar este cambio con alegría. Sí, somos personas pequeñas y rotas, y sí, a veces nos resistimos cuando Dios toma con nosotros caminos que no queremos tomar. Pero podemos saborear la alegría porque Jesús perdona el pecado: porque camina pacientemente a nuestro lado y nos devuelve al Padre cuando nuestros caminos llegan a un callejón sin salida. Para liberarnos de la impotencia y de la pequeñez, del pecado y de las tinieblas, Él dará su vida por nosotros. Por eso los cristianos asocian la alegría a la cruz. ¿Puede imaginarse una paradoja mayor?

 

PRIMERA LECTURA                      Isa 58, 9b-14

Cuando ya no persigas tu ventaja, encontrarás la alegría en el Señor.

Del profeta Isaías

Así habla Dios, el Señor:
“Cuando quitéis de entre vosotros la opresión
y los dedos amenazadores y la maledicencia
cuando abras tu corazón al hambriento
y sacies al sombrío ,
entonces tu luz brilla en las tinieblas
entonces tu noche se convierte en mediodía.
“Entonces el Señor continuará guiándote ;
Él te saciará en los lugares estériles
y a tus huesos dará fuerza.
“Como un jardín salpicado llegarás a ser entonces,

Los fariseos,

se quejaron de esto a sus discípulos:

¿Por qué coméis y bebéis con publicanos y pecadores?
Pero Jesús tomó la palabra y habló :
“No son los sanos los que necesitan médico, sino los enfermos.
“No he venido a llamar a los justos
sino a los pecadores
para que se arrepientan”.

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

200. Por otra parte, cualquier solución técnica que pretendan ofrecer las ciencias no podrá resolver los graves problemas del mundo, si la humanidad pierde el rumbo, si olvida las grandes motivaciones que hacen posible la convivencia, el sacrificio, la bondad. En cualquier caso, será necesario apelar a los fieles para que vivan de acuerdo con su fe y no vayan contra ella con sus actos, será necesario insistir en la reapertura a la gracia de Dios y en la profundización de las propias convicciones sobre el amor, la justicia y la paz. Si una mala comprensión de nuestros principios nos ha llevado a veces a justificar el abuso de la naturaleza o una dominación despótica de la creación por parte del ser humano o las guerras, la injusticia y la violencia, entonces podemos reconocer como creyentes que con ello hemos sido infieles al tesoro de sabiduría que deberíamos haber custodiado. A menudo, las fronteras culturales de las distintas épocas han definido esa conciencia de la propia herencia ética y espiritual, pero es precisamente el retorno a sus respectivas fuentes lo que permite a las religiones responder mejor a las necesidades actuales.

Considerations
Repentance and joy belong together. We need to repent, and celebrate this turnaround joyfully. Yes, we are small, broken people, and yes, we sometimes resist when God goes ways with us that we don’t want to go. But we get to taste the joy because Jesus forgives sin: because he patiently walks beside us and brings us back to the Father when our paths come to a dead end. To free us from helplessness and littleness, from sin and darkness, He will give His life for us. This is why Christians attach joy to a cross. Can a greater paradox be imagined?

 

FIRST READING                       Isa 58, 9b-14

When you no longer pursue your advantage, you will find joy in the Lord.

From the Prophet Isaiah

Thus speaks God the Lord :
“When ye remove from among you the oppression
and the threatening fingers and evil speaking,
when thou openest thine heart to the hungry
and satiate the gloomy ,
then thy light shines in the darkness,
then thy night becomes like noon.
“Then shall the Lord continue to guide thee ;
He will saturate thee in barren places
and to your bones He will give strength.

Truly, by the mouth of the Lord

On caring for the common home

200. On the other hand, whatever technical solution that the sciences pretend to offer will not be able to solve the serious problems of the world, if humanity loses its course, if it forgets the great motivations that make communal living, sacrifice, goodness possible. In any case, it will be necessary to appeal to the faithful to live in accordance with their faith and not go against it with their actions, it will be necessary to insist on reopening to the grace of God and drawing deeply from one’s own convictions regarding love, justice and peace. If a poor understanding of our principles has sometimes led us to justify the abuse of nature or a despotic domination of creation by the human being or wars, injustice and violence, then we can acknowledge as believers that in so doing we have been unfaithful to the treasure of wisdom we should have been guarding. Often the cultural boundaries of different times have defined such an awareness of one’s own ethical and spiritual heritage, but it is precisely the return to its respective sources that allows religions to better respond to current needs.

• Consideration
  Las lecturas de hoy destacan el ayuno desde distintos aspectos:
  -El ayuno es un precepto explícito en el T. O. ( Isaías) pero requiere una comprensión correcta
  para agradar a Dios. No se trata de rendimiento, sino de Dios y del prójimo.
  -El ayuno también aparece en el Evangelio. El Miércoles de Ceniza, escuchamos tres textos de reflexión
  del Sermón de la Montaña: limosna, oración, ayuno. El ayuno está al mismo nivel
  pero de nuevo advierte contra el logro y el mero espectáculo exterior.
  En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús habla con muchos matices sobre el ayuno. El ayuno no es la regla normal de la vida. Es una excepción. No se ayuna cuando hay fiesta. Entonces no conviene. La presencia de Jesús era como un banquete de bodas. Pero hay días en que el novio no está. Entonces le echamos de menos y caemos en nosotros mismos. Entonces tenemos que ayunar.

 

PRIMERA LECTURA                  Isa 58,1-9a

¿Es éste a veces un ayuno que me agrada?

Del profeta Isaías

Así habla Dios, el Señor:
“Grita fuerte, no te contengas
que tu voz resuene como una trompeta
y revela las transgresiones de mi pueblo,
la casa de Jacob sus pecados.
“Ciertamente, me consultan de día en día
esforzándose por conocer mi voluntad,
como si fueran un pueblo que practica la justicia
y no desprecian la ley de su Dios.
“Me piden juicios justos,
anhelan la presencia de su Dios.
“Ayunamos, ¿por qué no ves?
“Nos humillamos, ¿por qué no lo atiendes?
“He aquí que, mientras ayunáis, buscáis vuestro propio provecho

Las religiones en diálogo con la ciencia

199. No se puede pretender que las ciencias empíricas expliquen plenamente la vida, la esencia más profunda de todas las criaturas y la realidad entera. Hacerlo sería transgredir ilegítimamente sus límites metodológicos. Si se reflexiona dentro de este marco limitado, desaparecen la sensibilidad estética, la poesía e incluso la capacidad de la razón para comprender el sentido y la finalidad de las cosas. Quiero recordar que “los textos religiosos clásicos pueden ofrecer un sentido destinado a todos los tiempos, tienen un poder motivador que abre constantemente nuevos horizontes (…). ¿Es razonable e inteligente relegarlos a la oscuridad sólo porque nacieron en un contexto de creencia religiosa?”.  En realidad, es simplista pensar que los principios éticos sólo pueden plantearse de forma puramente abstracta, desvinculados de cualquier contexto, y el hecho de que se expresen en un lenguaje religioso no les priva de ningún valor en el debate público. Los principios éticos que la razón puede percibir pueden a veces reaparecer bajo una apariencia distinta y expresarse en términos diferentes, incluso religiosos.

Considerations
Today’s readings highlight fasting from different aspects:
-Fasting is an explicit precept in the O. T. ( Isaiah) but it requires a right understanding to
be pleasing to God. It is not about performance but about God and fellow man.
-Fasting also occurs in the Gospel. On Ash Wednesday, we listened to three reflection texts
from the Sermon on the Mount: almsgiving, prayer, fasting. Fasting is on the same level there
but again it warns against achievement and mere outward show.
In today’s gospel, Jesus speaks very nuanced about fasting. Fasting is not the normal rule in life. It is an exception. One does not fast when there is a feast. It is not fitting then. Jesus’ presence was like a wedding feast. But there come days when the bridegroom is away. Then we miss Him, and fall back on ourselves. Then we have to fast.

 

FIRST READING              Isa 58:1-9a

Is this sometimes a fast that pleases Me.

From the Prophet Isaiah

This is how God the Lord speaks :
“Call out loudly, do not hold back,
let your voice resound like a trumpet;
and reveal my people’s transgressions,
the house of Jacob its sins.
“Surely, they consult Me from day to day,
striving to know My will,
as if they were a people practising righteousness
and do not despise the law of their God.
“They ask Me for righteous judgments,
crave the presence of their God.
“We fast, why dost thou not see?
“We humble ourselves, why dost thou not heed it?
“Behold, while ye fast, ye are after your own gain
and exploit thy workers.
“It is with strife and strife that ye fast,
and adrift thou smitest with the fist.
“If thou shouldst fast thus
thy prayer finds no hearing in heaven.
“Is this sometimes a fast that pleases Me,
is so the day that man should humble himself :
Let his head hang down like a reed,
prostrate himself in sackcloth and ashes?
“Call ye that fasting,
is that what you call the day pleasing to the Lord?
“The fasting I wish is this:

Religions in dialogue with science

199. One cannot claim that the empirical sciences fully explain life, the deepest essence of all creatures and the whole of reality. To do so would be to transgress its methodological limits unlawfully. If one reflects within this limited framework, aesthetic sensibility, poetry and even reason’s ability to understand the meaning and purpose of things disappear. 1 I want to recall that “classical religious texts can offer a meaning destined for all times, have a motivating power that constantly opens new horizons (…). Is it reasonable and intelligent to relegate them to obscurity just because they were born in a context of religious belief?”. 2 In reality, it is simplistic to think that ethical principles can only be put forward in a purely abstract way, detached from any context, and the fact that they are expressed in a religious language does not deprive them of any value in the public debate. The ethical principles that reason can perceive can sometimes reappear under a different guise and be expressed in different, including religious, terms.

Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?

Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Zowel Mozes als Jezus (en ook de antwoordpsalm) spreken van een fundamentele keuze die elke mens moet maken. Men kiest voor het leven of voor de dood, voor het geluk of voor de ondergang. Bij nader toeziend dringt het woord van Jezus veel dieper door. Vooreerst moet die fundamentele keuze elke dag opnieuw waar gemaakt worden.  Ze is nooit af. Verder heeft het leven hier een diepere betekenis. Het is niet langer het ‘gelukkig leven in het land dat u beloofd werd’. Het gaat over een leven dat men dagelijks moet prijs geven, verliezen, verloochenen, om het ware, authentieke leven te winnen over de dood heen.

 

EERSTE LEZING                  Deut. 30, 15-20
Zie, ik houd u vandaag leven en geluk voor.

Uit het Boek Deuteronomium

Mozes nam het woord en sprak tot het volk :
“Ik houd u vandaag het leven en het geluk voor,
maar ook de dood en het ongeluk.
“Als gij luistert naar de geboden van de Heer uw God,
die ik u heden geef,
als gij de Heer uw God bemint,
zijn wegen gaat en zijn geboden,
voorschriften en bepalingen nakomt,
dan zult gij leven en talrijk worden
en zal de Heer uw God u zegenen
in het land, dat ge in bezit gaat nemen.
“Maar als uw hart afdwaalt,
als ge niet luistert en u laat verleiden,

198. Politiek en economie neigen ertoe elkaar te beschuldigen wat de armoede en het verval van het milieu betreft. Maar waar wij op wachten, is dat zij de eigen fouten erkennen en vormen van interactie vinden die gericht zijn op het algemeen welzijn. Terwijl sommigen alleen maar hun uiterste best doen voor het economisch nut en anderen alleen maar ervan bezeten zijn de macht te behouden of te vergroten, is wat ons rest oorlogen en dubbelzinnige overeenkomsten, waar hetgeen beide partijen minder interesseert, het beschermen van het milieu en zorg dragen voor de zwaksten is. Ook hier geldt het principe dat “de eenheid boven het conflict gaat”. 7

Consideración
Tanto Moisés como Jesús (así como el salmo de respuesta) hablan de una elección fundamental que todo ser humano tiene que hacer. Se elige la vida o la muerte, la felicidad o la ruina. Si se examina más de cerca, la palabra de Jesús penetra mucho más profundamente. En primer lugar, esta elección fundamental debe hacerse realidad cada día. Nunca está terminada. Además, la vida tiene aquí un significado más profundo. Ya no se trata de “vivir feliz en la tierra prometida”. Se trata de una vida a la que cada día hay que renunciar, perder, negar, para ganar la verdadera y auténtica vida sobre la muerte.

Hoy te presento la vida y la felicidad.

Moisés tomó la palabra y se dirigió al pueblo :
“Os presento hoy la vida y la felicidad ,

198. La política y la economía tienden a culparse mutuamente de la pobreza y de la degradación del medio ambiente. Pero lo que esperamos es que reconozcan sus propios errores y encuentren formas de interacción orientadas al bien común. Mientras unos hacen todo lo posible sólo por el beneficio económico y otros sólo están poseídos por mantener o aumentar el poder, lo que nos queda son guerras y acuerdos ambiguos, en los que lo que menos interesa a ambas partes es proteger el medio ambiente y cuidar de los más débiles. Aquí también se aplica el principio de que “la unidad prevalece sobre el conflicto”.

Consideration
Both Moses and Jesus (as well as the response psalm) speak of a fundamental choice that every human being has to make. One chooses life or death, happiness or ruin. On closer inspection, Jesus’ word penetrates much deeper. First of all, this fundamental choice must be made true every day. It is never finished. Furthermore, life has a deeper meaning here. It is no longer about ‘living happily in the land you were promised’. It is about a life one must daily give up, lose, deny, in order to gain true, authentic life over death.

 

FIRST READING                 Deut. 30, 15-20
Behold, I hold before you today life and happiness.

From the Book of Deuteronomy

Moses took the floor and spoke to the people :
“I hold out to you today life and happiness ,
but also death and misfortune.
“If you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God ,
which I give you this day,
if ye love the Lord your God,
go his ways and keep his commandments,
precepts and ordinances,
then shall ye live and be multiplied
and the Lord thy God will bless thee
in the land which ye are about to take possession of.
“But if thy heart stray,

Happy is the man who puts his hope in the Lord;

Happy is the man who refuses to do
What wicked men advise him ;
Who does not go the ways of sinners,
does not sit in the midst of mockers.

He is like a tree, planted by water,
which bears fruit in its time;
In summer his leaves do not wither,
but everything it does brings it prosperity.

The wicked do not fare so :
the wind blows them away like chaff.
For the Lord watches the way of the dishes,
the way of sinners is a dead end.

must follow Me by denying himself
and by taking up his cross every day.
“For whoever wants to save his life will lose it.
“But whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.
“What use is it for a man to gain all the world ,
if by so doing he causes himself his ruin and death ?”

On caring for the common home

198. Politics and economics tend to blame each other for poverty and environmental degradation. But what we are waiting for is for them to acknowledge their own mistakes and find forms of interaction aimed at the common good. While some do their utmost only for economic benefit and others are only possessed of maintaining or increasing power, what we are left with is wars and ambiguous agreements, where what both sides are less interested in is protecting the environment and caring for the weakest. Here too, the principle that “unity prevails over conflict” applies.
