Considerattion

Isaiah prays for help in his time of need. The second part of his prayer emphasises the fact that one cannot save oneself. All effort is in vain unless God saves: He who is able to raise even the dead to life. If He can do that, how could He not be able to save Israel? How would I describe God’s saving presence in my own life?

FIRST READING                     Isa . 26:7–9, 12, 16–19

Awake and rejoice, all you who lie buried in the dust!

From the Prophet Isaiah

Lord, the path of the devout is upright.
You make the way smooth for the righteous.
Even when You walk the path of Your judgements,
we look to You with hope;
to praise You and to remember You
is the longing of our hearts.
My heart longs for You in the night
and my soul seeks You in the morning.
When Your judgements strike the earth,
the inhabitants of the whole world learn what justice is.
But grant us peace, Lord,

On Care for Our Common Home

178. The tragedy of a politics focused on immediate results,
which is also fuelled by consumer society, makes it
necessary to generate short-term growth. For the sake of electoral
interests, governments are reluctant to risk upsetting the population
with measures that might affect consumption levels
or jeopardise foreign investment. A short-sighted
focus on power hinders the inclusion of a forward-looking environmental agenda
within governments’ public agendas. Thus, people forget that “time takes precedence over
space”, that it is more fruitful to focus on promoting positive processes
rather than on holding positions of power.
Political grandeur manifests itself when, in difficult
times, one acts on the basis of noble principles and with the
long-term common good in mind. Political power finds it very
difficult to incorporate this duty into a national project.

Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?

Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
Weer schemert de geschiedenis doorheen de lezing. Wanneer Assur volkeren vernietigt, voert het eigenlijk zonder het te weten de straf van God uit. Assur is met andere woorden een instrument in Gods handen. Maar ook in de hoogste nood zal God redden, en zal Jeruzalem gespaard blijven. Vinden we dat terug in ons levensverhaal? Waartoe zijn wij een instrument in Gods handen?

 

EERSTE LEZING    Jes. 10, 5-7.13-16
Gaat de bijl het soms opnemen tegen de man die ermee hakt?

Uit de Profeet Jesaja

Zo spreekt de Heer:
“Assur is de roede van mijn toorn,
de stok, die door mijn verbolgenheid gehanteerd wordt!
“Ik zend hem uit tegen een trouweloos volk;
Ik laat hem oprukken
tegen het volk waarop Ik vertoornd ben,
om daar te plunderen en te roven
en om dat volk te vertrappen
als de modder op de straten.
“Assur zelf echter bedoelt het niet zo,
hij ziet het niet zo in zijn hart:
zijn hart is alleen maar gebrand op vernielen,
op het verdelgen van veel volkeren,
want hij heeft gezegd:
Door mijn eigen kracht heb ik dat gedaan
en door mijn eigen inzicht,
want ik weet wel wat ik doe.
“Ik heb de grenzen van de volkeren verschoven
en hun schatten geroofd.
“Ik heb als een machtige held
de hooggezetenen doen tuimelen.
“Naar de rijkdom van de volkeren heeft mijn hand gegrepen
als naar een vogelnest
en ik heb de hele aarde gepakt,
zoals men in de steek gelaten eieren pakt:
Niemand verroerde een vleugel,
deed zijn snavel open of piepte!
“Want – zo luidt de godsspraak –
gaat de bijl het soms opnemen
tegen de man die ermee hakt?
“Of zal de zaag zich iets verbeelden
tegen degene die haar hanteert?
“Het zou zijn
alsof een staf zwaaide met degene die hem pakt,

Assurs koning de tering in zijn vet zenden

een vuur ontbranden, een laaiende vlam.”

Nooit zal de Heer zijn volk verstoten.

Verwaanden vertrappen uw volk, Heer,
uw erfdeel wordt deerlijk mishandeld.
Vreemden en weduwen slaan zij neer,
wezen brengen zij om.

Zij zeggen: de Heer ziet het toch niet,
Hij merkt het niet eens, Jakobs God.
Gebruikt uw verstand, kortzichtige mensen,
gij dwazen, wanneer wordt ge wijs?

Zou Hij die ons oren gaf zelf niet horen,
zou Hij die het oog maakte zelf niet zien?
Die volken terecht wijst, zou Hij niet straffen,

Nooit zal de Heer zijn volk verstoten,

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis

177. De mogelijkheid van onverantwoord gebruik van menselijke
vermogens in aanmerking genomen, heeft iedere staat binnen het eigen
grondgebied de functie, te plannen, coördineren, bewaken en bestraffen.
Hoe ordent en bewaakt de maatschappij de eigen toekomst in een context
van voortdurende technologische vernieuwingen? Een factor die in dezen
doeltreffend regulerend werkt, is het recht, dat de gedragsregels in het
licht van het algemeen welzijn vaststelt. De grenzen die een gezonde,
volwassen en soevereine maatschappij moet opleggen, betreffen vooruitzichten
en voorzorgsmaatregelen, adequate regelingen, waakzaamheid
betreffende het toepassen van de normen, het bestrijden van corruptie,
operationele controle op het aan de oppervlakte komen van niet gewenste
effecten van productieprocessen en passend ingrijpen ten opzichte van
mogelijke risico’s. Er bestaat een groeiende jurisprudentie die erop gericht
is de vervuilende effecten van de activiteiten van ondernemingen terug te
dringen. Maar de politieke en institutionele structuur bestaat niet alleen
om misstanden te vermijden, maar ook om de goede praktijken aan te
moedigen, om de creativiteit die nieuwe wegen zoekt te stimuleren en om
persoonlijke en collectieve initiatieven te vergemakkelijken.

Consideración
Una vez más, la historia se vislumbra a través de la lectura. Cuando Asiria destruye a los pueblos, en realidad está ejecutando, sin saberlo, el castigo de Dios. En otras palabras, Asiria es un instrumento en manos de Dios. Pero incluso en la mayor de las adversidades, Dios salvará y Jerusalén se salvará. ¿Encontramos eso en la historia de nuestra vida? ¿Para qué somos un instrumento en manos de Dios?

PRIMERA LECTURA                    Is . 10, 5-7.13-16
¿Acaso el hacha se enfrentará al hombre que la maneja?

Del profeta Isaías

Así habla el Señor:
«¡Asiria es la vara de mi ira,
el bastón que manejo en mi furor!
«La envío contra un pueblo infiel;
la hago avanzar
contra el pueblo contra el que estoy airado,
para que allí saquee y robe,
y para pisotear a ese pueblo
como el barro de las calles.
«Sin embargo, Asiria no tiene esa intención,
ni lo concibe así en su corazón:
su corazón solo ansía destruir,
en exterminar a muchos pueblos,
pues ha dicho:
«Lo he hecho con mi propia fuerza

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

177. Teniendo en cuenta la posibilidad de un uso irresponsable de las capacidades humanas,
cada Estado tiene, dentro de su propio
territorio, la función de planificar, coordinar, vigilar y sancionar.
¿Cómo organiza y vigila la sociedad su propio futuro en un contexto de innovaciones
tecnológicas constantes? Un factor que, en este sentido, ejerce una función reguladora
eficaz es el derecho, que establece las normas de conducta a la luz del bien común.
Los límites que debe imponer una sociedad sana,
madura y soberana se refieren a las perspectivas
y medidas de precaución, a una normativa adecuada, a la vigilancia
en la aplicación de las normas, a la lucha contra la corrupción,
el control operativo de la aparición de efectos indeseados de los procesos de producción
y la intervención adecuada ante posibles riesgos. Existe una jurisprudencia cada vez más
amplia destinada a reducir los efectos contaminantes de las actividades de las empresas.
Pero la estructura política e institucional no solo existe
para evitar los abusos, sino también para fomentar las buenas prácticas,
estimular la creatividad que busca nuevos caminos y facilitar las iniciativas personales y colectivas.

Consideration
Once again, history shines through the reading. When Assyria destroys nations, it is in fact, without realising it, carrying out God’s punishment. In other words, Assyria is an instrument in God’s hands. But even in the deepest distress, God will save, and Jerusalem will be spared. Do we see this reflected in our own life stories? In what ways are we instruments in God’s hands?

FIRST READING                  Isaiah 10:5–7, 13–16
Can the axe perhaps rise up against the man who wields it?

From the Prophet Isaiah

Thus says the Lord:
“Assyria is the rod of my wrath,
the staff wielded by my fury!
“I am sending him against a faithless people;
I am sending him forth
against the people against whom I am angry,
to plunder and pillage there,
and to trample that people down,
like mud in the streets.
“Assyria itself, however, does not mean it that way,
it does not see it that way in its heart:
its heart is set only on destruction,
on the extermination of many nations,
for he has said:
‘By my own strength I have done this,
and by my own wisdom,
for I know well what I am doing.’
“I have shifted the boundaries of the nations,
and plundered their treasures.
“Like a mighty hero,
I have brought down those in high places.
“My hand has seized the wealth of the nations,
as one seizes a bird’s nest,
and I have taken hold of the whole earth,

177. Bearing in mind the possibility of irresponsible use of human
capabilities, every state has a duty, within its own
territory, to plan, coordinate, monitor and impose sanctions.
How does society organise and safeguard its own future in a context of
constant technological innovation? One factor which acts as an
effective regulatory force in this regard is the law, which establishes rules of conduct in the
light of the common good. The boundaries that a healthy,
mature and sovereign society must impose relate to foresight,
precautionary measures, adequate regulations, vigilance
regarding the application of standards, the fight against corruption,
operational monitoring of the emergence of undesirable
effects of production processes, and appropriate intervention in the face of
potential risks. There is a growing body of case law aimed at
reducing the polluting effects of companies’ activities. However, the political
and institutional structure exists not only
to prevent abuses, but also to encourage good practices, to stimulate the
creativity that seeks new paths, and to facilitate personal and collective initiatives.

Overweging

Op elk moment van ons leven maken we keuzes: vóór of tegen God. We zijn er ons niet altijd van bewust. Maar op elk moment van ons leven kunnen we nagaan wat God van ons vraagt, wat Hij van ons verlangt. Ons antwoord op die vraag van God maakt dat we in harmonie met Hem kunnen samenleven. Want dat zegt de eerste lezing van vandaag: ‘Geloof in God en gij houdt stand’. Neem ik Gods vraag ernstig, of twijfel ik en wil ik een duidelijk teken? Welke kansen heb ik daardoor mogelijk laten liggen? Is het vertrouwen in God de rode draad in mijn leven?

EERSTE LEZING                Jes. 7, 1-9
Als gij niet gelooft, dan houdt ge geen stand !

Uit de Profeet Jesaja

In die tijd dat Achaz koning van Juda was,
trok Resin, de koning van Aram,
samen met de koning van Israël,
tegen Jeruzalem op,
maar hij slaagde er niet in de stad te overmeesteren.
Toen aan het huis van David bericht werd,
dat Aram zich met Efraïm had verbonden,
beefde het hart van de koning en het hart van zijn volk,
zoals de bomen in het woud beven wanneer de wind waait.
De Heer sprak echter tot Jesaja :
“Gij moet Achaz tegemoet treden,
samen met uw zoon Sear-Jasub,
bij het einde van de waterleiding van de Bovenvijver,
op de weg naar het Blekersveld.
“Daar moet gij het volgende tegen hem zeggen :
Blijf maar rustig, wees niet bevreesd
en laat uw hart niet onthutst zijn
om die twee rokende stompen brandhout,
om de wilde woede van de koning van Aram
en de koning van Israël.
“Omdat Aram samen met Efraïm
en met de koning van Israël
onheil tegen u heeft beraamd
en het plan heeft gemaakt, tegen Juda op te trekken,
het schrik aan te jagen, het te overmeesteren
en er dan de zoon van Tabeal koning te maken,
daarom heeft God de Heer aldus gesproken :
“Dat zal niet doorgaan ! Dat zal niet gebeuren !
“Want Damascus mag de hoofdstad van Aram zijn
en Resin het hoofd van Damascus,
Samaria mag de hoofdstad van Efraïm zijn
en de koning van Israël het hoofd van Samaria,
maar over vijfenzestig jaar
zal Efraïm ophouden een volk te zijn.
“Als gij niet gelooft, dan houdt ge geen stand !”

TUSSENZANG                Ps. 48(47), 2-3a, 3b-4, 5-6, 7-8

De stad van de Heer der hemelse legers,
God houdt haar voor eeuwig in stand.

Groot is de Heer, Hij zij hoog geprezen
in onze Godsstad Jeruzalem.
Zijn heilige berg rijst daar schitterend op,
een vreugde voor ieder op aarde.

Voor ons is de Sion de Godenberg,
de stad van de Grote Koning.
God zelf, die binnen haar burchten verblijft,
Hij toont zich een veilige vesting.

Zie, koningen kwamen te zamen
en rukten tegen haar op.
Maar toen zij haar zagen werden zij bang
en sloegen verschrikt op de vlucht.

Opeens overviel hen de angst

¿Puedo aprovechar esta ocasión para llamar su atención sobre
la lectura diaria del Evangelio?

Esta invitación tiene por objeto hacerle partícipe de la alegría
del Evangelio. Todo el mundo, sin excepción,
puede experimentar esa alegría abriendo su corazón
a la acción sanadora de la palabra de Dios.

Consideración
En cada momento de nuestra vida tomamos decisiones: a favor o en contra de Dios. No siempre somos conscientes de ello. Pero en cada momento de nuestra vida podemos preguntarnos qué nos pide Dios, qué espera de nosotros. Nuestra respuesta a esa pregunta de Dios nos permite convivir en armonía con Él. Porque eso es lo que dice la primera lectura de hoy:«Creed en Dios y permaneceréis firmes». ¿Me tomo en serio la pregunta de Dios, o dudo y quiero una señal clara? ¿Qué oportunidades he dejado pasar por ello? ¿Es la confianza en Dios el hilo conductor de mi vida?

¡Si no creéis, no resistiréis!

Del profeta Isaías

En aquellos días, cuando Acaz era rey de Judá,
Resín, rey de Aram,
junto con el rey de Israel,
contra Jerusalén,
pero no logró conquistar la ciudad.
Cuando se dio a conocer a la casa de David
que Aram se había aliado con Efraín,
el corazón del rey y el corazón de su pueblo temblaron,
como tiemblan los árboles del bosque cuando sopla el viento.
Sin embargo, el Señor habló a Isaías:
«Debes salir al encuentro de Acaz,
junto con tu hijo Sear-Jasub,
al final del acueducto del Estanque Superior,

Consideration

At every moment of our lives, we make choices: for or against God. We are not always aware of this. But at every moment of our lives, we can discern what God asks of us, what He desires of us. Our response to God’s question enables us to live in harmony with Him. For that is what today’s first reading says:‘Believe in God, and you will stand firm’. Do I take God’s question seriously, or do I doubt and want a clear sign? What opportunities might I have missed as a result? Is trust in God the common thread running through my life?

FIRST READING                Isaiah 7:1–9
If you do not believe, you will not stand firm!

From the Prophet Isaiah

In the days of Ahaz, king of Judah,
Rezin, king of Aram,
together with the king of Israel,
marched against Jerusalem,
but he failed to take the city.
When word reached the house of David,
that Aram had allied itself with Ephraim,
the king’s heart and the hearts of his people trembled,
just as the trees in the forest tremble when the wind blows.
However, the Lord spoke to Isaiah:
‘You must go out to meet Ahaz,
together with your son Shear-Jashub,
at the end of the water channel from the Upper Pool,
on the road to the Field of the Tanners.
“There you must say the following to him:
‘Be at peace, do not be afraid,

Uitnodiging

Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?

Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Iedere dag beschikbaar.

Overweging
Het lijkt tegenstrijdig. God die minutieuze regels vastlegt (Lev 1, 1-17), die gruwelijke straffen afkondigde voor wie zich niet aan de eredienst hielden (Lev 26, 14), deze God zegt nu dat Hij de offers van zijn volk niet meer verdraagt? De schok zou niet groter zijn indien Jezus ons vandaag zou zeggen: ‘Stop nu eens met naar de kerk te komen en eucharistie te vieren!’ En toch zegt Jezus wel iets in die zin:  wanneer we aan het altaar komen en wrok voelen gens iemand, dan moeten ook wij weggaan, om ons eerst te verzoenen vooraleer we terugkomen (Mat 5, 24). Het werkelijke offer dat God verwacht van zijn kinderen is dat ze in hun dagelijkse leven ten dienste staan van hun medemensen, in het bijzonder van de meest kwetsbaren.

EERSTE  LEZING            Jes. 1, 11-17
Gaat u reinigen! Uit mijn ogen met uw boze daden!

Uit de Profeet Jesaja

Zo spreekt de Heer, uw God:
“Waar dienen uw vele offers toe?
“Ik ben ze beu, uw brandoffers van rammen
en het vet van de gemeste kalveren.
“Het bloed van stieren en schapen en bokken
behaagt Mij niet langer.
“Wanneer gij voor mijn aangezicht verschijnt –
wie heeft het van u gevraagd,
dat ge mijn voorhoven platloopt?
“Staakt toch die zinloze offers!
“Ik walg van hun geur!
“Nieuwe maan en sabbat en hoogtijdag,
zij behagen Mij niet langer:
Ik wens geen feesten, gepaard met wangedrag!

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis

175. Dezelfde logica, die het moeilijk maakt drastische besluiten te nemen
om de globale opwarming terug te dringen, maakt het niet mogelijk het
uitroeien van de armoede te verwezenlijken. Wij hebben behoefte aan een
wereldwijde, meer verantwoorde reactie, die tegelijkertijd het terugdringen
van de vervuiling en de ontwikkeling van de arme landen en regio’s
inhoudt. Terwijl de 21ste eeuw een beheer handhaaft dat eigen is aan
vervlogen tijden, maakt zij een verlies aan macht van de nationale staten
mee, vooral omdat de economie en de financiële wereld een transnationaal
karakter bezit die ernaar neigt de politiek te overheersen. In deze context
wordt de ontwikkeling van sterkere en efficiënt georganiseerde instellingen
onontbeerlijk, met bevoegdheden die onpartijdig worden bepaald door
middel van overeenkomsten tussen nationale regeringen en de macht
hebben om sancties op te leggen. Zoals Benedictus XVI heeft gezegd in de
door de sociale leer van de Kerk reeds ontwikkelde lijn: “Om de wereldeconomie
te sturen, de door de crisis getroffen economieën te saneren, een
verergering van de crisis en daaruit voortvloeiende onevenwichtigheden te
voorkomen, om een gepaste integrale ontwapening, veiligheid en vrede tot
stand te brengen, om de bescherming van het milieu te waarborgen en om
de migratiestromen te reglementeren, is een echt politiek wereldgezag nood
zakelijk, zoals door mijn voorganger, de zalige paus Johannes XXIII, reeds
is geschetst”. In dit perspectief krijgt de diplomatie een ongekend belang
om internationale strategieën te bevorderen die ernstige problemen,die
allen uiteindelijk zullen treffen, te voorkom

Consideración
Parece contradictorio. Dios, que establece normas minuciosas (Lev 1, 1-17) y que anunciaba castigos atroces para quienes no respetaran el culto (Lev 26, 14), ¿ese mismo Dios dice ahora que ya no soporta los sacrificios de su pueblo? La conmoción no sería mayor si Jesús nos dijera hoy: «¡Dejad ya de venir a la iglesia y de celebrar la Eucaristía!» Y, sin embargo, Jesús sí dice algo en ese sentido: cuando nos acercamos al altar y sentimos rencor hacia alguien, también nosotros debemos marcharnos, para reconciliarnos primero antes de volver (Mateo 5, 24). El verdadero sacrificio que Dios espera de sus hijos es que, en su vida cotidiana, estén al servicio de sus semejantes, en especial de los más vulnerables.

Así habla el Señor, vuestro Dios:
«¿Para qué sirven vuestros numerosos sacrificios?

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:
«No penséis quehe venidoa traer paz a la tierra;
no he venido a traer paz, sino espada.
«He venido a traer división
entre un hombre y su padre, entre una hija y su madre,
entre una nuera y su suegra;
y los de su propia casa serán sus enemigos.
«Quien ame más a su padre o a su madre que a mí,
no es digno de mí;
quien ame más a su hijo o a su hija que a mí,
no es digno de mí.
«Y quien no tome su cruz y me siga,
no es digno de mí.
«Quien encuentre su vida, la perderá,
y quien pierda su vida por mi causa, la encontrará.
«Quien os acoja, me acoge a mí;
y quien me acoja, acoge a Aquel que me ha enviado.
«Quien acoja a un profeta por ser profeta,
recibirá también la recompensa de un profeta;
y quien acoja a un justo,
por ser justo,
recibirá también la recompensa de un justo.
«Y quien dé a uno de estos pequeños,
aunque solo sea un vaso de agua fría,
porque es mi discípulo,
en verdad os digo:
su recompensa no le faltará».
Cuando Jesús terminó de enseñar a sus doce discípulos,
se marchó de allí
para enseñar y predicar en sus ciudades.

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

175. La misma lógica que dificulta la adopción de decisiones drásticas
para frenar el calentamiento global impide que se logre la
erradicación de la pobreza. Necesitamos una
respuesta global y más responsable, que implique a la vez la reducción
de la contaminación y el desarrollo de los países y regiones pobres
. Mientras el siglo XXI mantiene una gestión propia de
tiempos pasados, conlleva una pérdida de poder de los Estados nacionales,
sobre todo porque la economía y el mundo financiero tienen un carácter transnacional
que tiende a dominar la política. En este contexto,
resulta indispensable el desarrollo de instituciones más sólidas y eficientemente organizadas,
con competencias definidas de manera imparcial mediante
acuerdos entre los gobiernos nacionales y con
facultad para imponer sanciones. Como ha dicho Benedicto XVI, siguiendo la línea ya desarrollada por la doctrina social de la Iglesia: «Para dirigir la economía mundial, sanear las economías afectadas por la crisis, evitar un agravamiento de la crisis y los desequilibrios que de ella se derivan, lograr un desarme integral adecuado, la seguridad y la paz, garantizar la protección del medio ambiente y regular los flujos migratorios, es indispensable…».

May I take this opportunity to draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation aims to share with you the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, without exception,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s Word.

Consideration
It seems contradictory. God, who laid down meticulous rules (Lev 1:1–17), who proclaimed horrific punishments for those who did not observe the rites of worship (Lev 26:14), this very God now says that He can no longer tolerate the sacrifices of His people? The shock would be no greater if Jesus were to say to us today: ‘Stop coming to church and celebrating the Eucharist!’ And yet Jesus does say something along those lines: if we approach the altar whilst harbouring resentment towards someone, then we too must leave, to seek reconciliation first before returning (Matt 5:24). The true sacrifice that God expects of his children is that they should serve their fellow human beings in their daily lives, especially the most vulnerable.

Go and purify yourselves! Remove your evil deeds from my sight!

Thus says the Lord, your God:
“What use are your many sacrifices?
“I have had enough of your burnt offerings of rams
and the fat of fattened calves.
“The blood of bulls, sheep and goats
no longer pleases Me.
“When you appear before me –
who has asked this of you,
that you should trample my courtyards?
“Cease, then, these meaningless sacrifices!
“I am sickened by their smell!
“New Moon, Sabbath and feast days,
they no longer please Me:
I desire no festivals accompanied by misconduct!
“Your new moon festivals and your feast days,
they weigh heavily upon My heart
and I will bear that burden no longer!
“When you lift up your hands,
I close My eyes.

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth;
I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
“I have come to bring division
between a man and his father, between a daughter and her mother,
between a daughter-in-law and her mother-in-law;
and a man’s own household will be his enemies.
“Whoever loves father or mother more than Me,
is not worthy of Me;
whoever loves son or daughter more than Me,
is not worthy of Me.
“And whoever does not take up their cross and follow Me,
is not worthy of Me.
“Whoever finds their life will lose it,
and whoever loses their life for My sake will find it.
“Whoever receives you receives Me;
and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me.
“Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet,
shall also receive a prophet’s reward;
and whoever receives a righteous person,
because he is a righteous person,
shall also receive a righteous person’s reward.

On Care for Our Common Home

175. The same logic that makes it difficult to take drastic decisions
to curb global warming also makes it impossible to achieve the
eradication of poverty. We need a global, more responsible response,
which simultaneously involves reducing
pollution and promoting the development of poor countries and regions.
Whilst the 21st century maintains a system of governance characteristic of
by-gone eras, it is witnessing a loss of power by nation states,
primarily because the economy and the financial world possess a transnational
character that tends to dominate politics. In this context,
the development of stronger and more efficiently organised institutions
becomes indispensable, with powers defined impartially
through agreements between national governments and the authority
to impose sanctions. As Benedict XVI stated, in line with the approach already developed by the Church’s social teaching: “To steer the global economy, to restore the economies affected by the crisis,
to prevent a worsening of the crisis and the resulting imbalances,
to bring about appropriate comprehensive disarmament, security and peace, to ensure the protection of the environment and to regulate migration flows, a genuine global political authority is necessary, as already outlined by my predecessor, the Blessed Pope John XXIII”. In this context, diplomacy takes on unprecedented importance in promoting international strategies that ensure the protection of the environment and regulate migration flows,
