Mag ik hierbij uw aandacht vestigen op
de dagelijkse lezing van het Evangelie?

Deze uitnodiging wil de vreugde
van het Evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door hun harten te openen
voor de helende kracht van Gods woord.

OPENINGS WOORD

Jezus bidt tot zijn Vader om eenheid.
Zoals de Vader en de Zoon één zijn,
zo moeten ook zijn discipelen één zijn.
Vandaag sluiten we ons aan bij Jezus’ gebed
en vragen we dringend
dat God eenheid onder christenen bevordert.
Op weg naar Pinksteren bidden we
dat de Heilige Geest ons de kracht zal geven
om in vriendschap naar elkaar toe te groeien
en zo een teken van hoop te zijn voor de wereld.

EERSTE LEZING          Handelingen 7, 55-60
Ik zie de Mensenzoon staan aan Gods rechterhand.

In die dagen staarde Stefanus,
vervuld van de Heilige Geest,
staarde omhoog naar de hemel en zag de glorie van God
en Jezus die aan Gods rechterhand stond
en hij riep uit:
“Ik zie de hemelen opengaan
en de Mensenzoon die aan Gods rechterhand staat.”
Maar zij begonnen luid te schreeuwen,
stopten hun oren dicht
en stormden als één man op hem af.
Ze sleepten hem de poort uit en stenigden hem.
De getuigen legden hun mantels neer
aan de voeten van een jonge man die Paulus heette.

Terwijl ze Stefanus stenigden
bad hij:
“Heer Jezus, ontvang mijn geest.”
Toen viel hij op zijn knieën
en riep met luide stem uit:
“Heer, reken hen deze zonde niet aan.”
Na deze woorden ontsliep hij.

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis

8. Patriarch Bartholomeus benadrukte in het bijzonder de noodzaak
dat iedereen zich bekeert over de manier waarop hij de planeet mishandelt, want
“in de mate dat we allemaal kleine ecologische schade
veroorzaken”, zijn we geroepen om “onze kleine of grote bijdrage te leveren aan de
verstoring en vernietiging van het milieu”. Op dit punt
heeft hij zich herhaaldelijk op een krachtige en tot nadenken stemmende manier uitgedrukt
door ons uit te nodigen om onze zonden tegen de schepping te erkennen:
“Dat mensen de biologische diversiteit in Gods schepping vernietigen;
dat de mens de integriteit van de aarde in gevaar brengt en bijdraagt
aan klimaatverandering door de aarde te ontdoen van haar natuurlijke
bossen of door de vernietiging van haar wetlands; dat mensen andere
mensen schaden en ziek maken door het water, de bodem en de
lucht: dit zijn allemaal zonden”. Want “een misdaad tegen
natuur is een misdaad tegen onszelf en een zonde tegen God”.

Jesús ruega a su Padre por la unidad.

En el camino hacia Pentecostés, pedimos
que el Espíritu Santo nos dé la fuerza
para crecer los unos hacia los otros en la amistad
y ser así un signo de esperanza para el mundo.

PRIMERA LECTURA                Hechos 7, 55-60
Veo al Hijo del hombre de pie a la derecha de Dios.

En aquellos días Esteban miraba fijamente,
lleno del Espíritu Santo,
miró al cielo y vio la gloria de Dios
y a Jesús de pie a la derecha de Dios
y exclamó:
“Veo los cielos abiertos
y al Hijo del hombre de pie a la derecha de Dios”
Pero ellos comenzaron a gritar fuertemente,

8. El Patriarca Bartolomé hizo especial hincapié en la necesidad
de que cada uno se arrepienta del modo en que maltrata al planeta, porque
“en la medida en que todos causamos pequeños daños ecológicos
causamos”, estamos llamados a “aportar nuestra pequeña o gran contribución a la
perturbación y destrucción del medio ambiente”. Sobre este punto
se ha expresado en repetidas ocasiones de forma contundente y que invita a la reflexión
invitándonos a reconocer nuestros pecados contra la creación:
“Que los humanos están destruyendo la diversidad biológica de la creación de Dios;
que los humanos comprometen la integridad de la tierra y contribuyen
al cambio climático despojando a la tierra de sus bosques naturales o
destruyendo sus humedales; que los humanos dañan a otras
personas y las enferman contaminando el agua, el suelo y el
aire: todos ellos son pecados”. Porque “un crimen contra
naturaleza es un crimen contra nosotros mismos y un pecado contra Dios”.

OVERVIEW
In the story of the storm on the lake, many spiritual guides have given meaning to its various elements: the boat, the storm and its stilling. The boat is our life boat that often does get caught in the storm. Pope Benedict XVI saw in the boat and the storm the situation of the Church today. Perhaps the point of this story is that in the midst of the storm, Jesus remains unshakable and in all storms and winds we can and should always trust in Him. He sails with us. He can calm the storm.

FIRST READING       Gen 19:15-29

God the Lord sent down from heaven sulphur and fire
rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah.

In those days,
the angels urged Lot to hurry and said:
“Forward, take thy wife and both thy daughters ;
otherwise you will be the victim of the city’s punishment.
When Lot still hesitated, the men seized himself,
his wife and both his daughters by the hand,
for the LORD wanted to spare them,
and they brought them out of the city.
And when they had brought them out of the city ,
one of them said:
“Get yourself to safety ,
for your life is at stake;
look not round, stay nowhere near,
but flee into the mountains, lest ye perish.”
But Lot said to them:
“Not that, LORD!
Surely thou hast been very good to thy servant
and have done me a great favour
by leaving me alive ,
but I cannot possibly flee to the mountains.
There calamity would overtake me
and I would find death anyway.
Look, there is a city not far from here;
i want to flee there;
it is a small town.
Let me take refuge there;
it’s small anyway.
And then I will make it out alive.”
God spoke to him:
“In this also I will be kind to you;
i will not destroy the city you mean.
“Now flee there hastily, for I can do nothing
until thou hast arrived there.”
So it is that city called Soar.

As soon as the sun had risen and Lot had arrived in Soar,
god the LORD sent down from heaven sulfur and fire
rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah.
He destroyed those cities and the whole region,
with all the inhabitants and all that grew there.
Lot’s wife, who was walking behind him,
turned around and turned into a lump of salt.
Early in the morning Abraham went to the place
where he had stood with the LORD.
He looked down at Sodom and Gomorrah
and all the region of Jordan,
and saw a smoke rising from the earth,
like the smoke of a smelter.
Thus, in destroying the cities of that region of the land, God took
heeded Abraham’s wish and allowed Lot to escape,
when He destroyed the cities where he had lived.

“Lord, save us, we are perishing!”
He spoke to them:
“Why are ye afraid, little believers?”
Then He stood up,
addressed the winds and the sea with a compelling word,
and the waters became perfectly still.
The people stood amazed and said:
“What kind of person is that ,
that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

On caring for the common home

38. We recall, for example, the lungs of the planet that are
are brimming with biodiversity, such as the Amazon and the river basin
of the Congo or the great aquifers and glaciers. The
importance of these places for the whole of the planet and the future
of humanity is all too well known. The ecosystems of tropical
forests have a biodiversity of great complexity, which it is
impossible to know completely, but when these forests are burned
are set on fire or razed to the ground to increase the cultivation
of produce increase, then within few years
countless species are lost or these areas turn into barren deserts.
A delicate balance urges itself, however, when talking about
these places, because one also cannot ignore the tremendous international economic
interests which, on the pretext of taking care of them,
may jeopardise national sovereignty. Indeed, there are
“proposals to internationalise the Amazon, which
only serve the economic interests of the multinationals”.
Commendable is the commitment of international organisations and nongovernmental
organisations (NGOs) that sensitise the peoples and cooperate in a
critical cooperation, also using legitimate
means of pressure, so that each government fulfils its own and non-delegable
task of protecting its own country’s environment and natural resources without
protect without selling itself to dubious local and
international interests.

OPENING WORD

Jesus prays to his Father for unity.
As the Father and the Son are one,
so too his disciples should be one.
Today we join Jesus’ prayer
and urgently ask
that God promote unity among Christians.
On the way to Pentecost, we pray
that the Holy Spirit will give us the strength
to grow towards one another in friendship
and thus be a sign of hope to the world.

I see the Son of Man standing at God’s right hand.

In those days Stephen stared,
filled with the Holy Spirit,
gazed up to heaven and saw the glory of God
and Jesus standing at God’s right hand

8. Patriarch Bartholomew particularly stressed the need
that each repent of the way he mistreats the planet, because
“to the extent that we all cause small ecological damage
cause”, we are called to “make our small or large contribution to the
disruption and destruction of the environment”. On this point
he has repeatedly expressed himself in a forceful and thought-provoking manner
by inviting us to acknowledge our sins against creation:
“That humans are destroying the biological diversity in God’s creation;
that humans compromise the integrity of the earth and contribute
to climate change by stripping the earth of its natural
forests or by destroying its wetlands; that humans harm other
people harm and make them sick by polluting the water, soil and
air: these are all sins”. For “a crime against
nature is a crime against ourselves and a sin against God “.

Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,

voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
De liturgie leert ons vandaag hopen, en verwachten. Vurig uitzien naar wat als goddelijke belofte, niet als geplande prestatie, komen zal. Wees gegroet Maria, de meest gezegende ben je van alle vrouwen, en gezegend is de vrucht van uw schoot: met deze woorden reageert Elisabet op de begroeting van Maria. Louter menselijk gezien staan we hier voor een raadsel. Maar bijbels gesproken weten we dat God het initiatief neemt. Alles spreekt van vreugde en blijdschap. De Bijbelse mens heeft toekomst: hij leeft tussen het reeds en het nog niet helemaal. Hij leeft met de voorbode van het einde, de levenwekkende adem van Gods Geest. Christenen lopen vooruit op het feest dat komt: op de dag waarop God alles in allen zal zijn.

De Heer, de Koning van Israël, blijft bij u.

Uit de profeet Sefanja

Sion jubel van vreugde,
juich, Israël,
verheug u en wees blij, Jeruzalem,

Het vonnis dat op u drukte,

Waaraan heb ik het te danken dat de moeder van mijn Heer naar mij toekomt ?

Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Lucas

In die dagen reisde Maria met spoed naar het bergland,
naar een stad in Juda.
Zij ging het huis van Zacharias binnen en groette Elisabeth.
Zodra Elisabeth de groet van Maria hoorde,
sprong het kind op in haar schoot.
Elisabeth werd vervuld met de heilige Geest
en riep uit met luide stem :
“Gij zijt gezegend onder de vrouwen
en gezegend is de vrucht van uw schoot.
“Waaraan heb ik het te danken
dat de moeder van mijn Heer naar mij toe komt ?

En Maria sprak :

“En zie, van heden af prijst elk geslacht mij zalig
omdat Hij die machtig is aan mij zijn wonderwerken deed,
en heilig is zijn Naam.
“Barmhartig is Hij, van geslacht tot geslacht
voor hen die Hem vrezen.
“Hij toont de kracht van zijn arm ;
slaat trotsen van hart uiteen.
“Heersers ontneemt Hij hun troon,
maar Hij verheft de geringen.
“Die hongeren overlaadt Hij met gaven,
en rijken zendt Hij heen met lege handen.
“Zijn dienaar Israël heeft Hij zich aangetrokken,

Nadat Maria ongeveer drie maanden bij Elisabeth gebleven was
keerde zij naar huis terug.

7. Deze bijdragen van de pausen omvatten de reflectie van talloze wetenschappers,
filosofen, theologen en maatschappelijke organisaties die het

La liturgia de hoy nos enseña a esperar, y a esperar. Esperar fervientemente lo que vendrá como una promesa divina, no como una actuación planificada.Dios te salve, María, bendita tú eres entre todas las mujeres, y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre: con estas palabras responde Elisabet al saludo de María. Todo habla de alegría y gozo. El hombre bíblico tiene futuro: vive entre el ya y el todavía no. Vive con el presagio del fin, el soplo vivificante del Espíritu de Dios. El cristiano anticipa la fiesta venidera: el día en que Dios será todo en todos.

Entró en casa de Zacarías y saludó a Isabel.
En cuanto Isabel oyó el saludo de María
el niño saltó en su vientre.
Isabel se llenó del Espíritu Santo
y exclamó a gran voz
“Bendita tú eres entre todas las mujeres
y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre.
“¿A qué debo
que la madre de mi Señor venga a mí?

The liturgy today teaches us to hope, and to expect. Fervently looking forward to what will come as a divine promise, not a planneda performance.Hail Mary, most blessed are you of all women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb: with these words Elisabet responds to Mary’s greeting. In purely human terms, we are faced with a conundrum here. But biblically speaking, we know that God takes the initiative. Everything speaks of joy and gladness. Biblical man has a future: he lives between the already and the not quite yet. He lives with the foreshadowing of the end, the life-giving breath of God’s Spirit. Christians anticipate the feast to come: the day when God will be all in all.

The Lord, the King of Israel, abides with you.

Zion rejoice for joy,

rejoice and be glad, Jerusalem,

In those days Mary travelled in haste to the mountain country,
to a town in Judah.
She entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elisabeth.
As soon as Elisabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the child jumped up in her womb.
Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit
and exclaimed in a loud voice :
“Thou art blessed among women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
“To what do I owe it
that the mother of my Lord comes to me ?
“Behold, as soon as the sound of thy greeting reached my ear
the child leapt up with joy in my womb.

And Mary spoke :

“For joy my spirit rejoices for God my Saviour :

7. These contributions by the popes include the reflections of numerous scholars
philosophers, theologians and civil society organisations that have
thinking of the Church regarding these issues. We cannot
ignore, however, that outside the Catholic Church, other
Churches and Christian communities – as well as other religions – have developed a
deep concern and precious reflection on these
themes that are dear to all of us. To mention just one particularly significant
example, I would like to briefly resume part of the
contribution of our beloved Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew,
with whom we share the hope of full ecclesial unity.

Uitnodiging

Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?

Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Iedere dag beschikbaar.

Overweging
Bij herhaling zagen we hoe de catechese vaak minimaal was. Ook blijft Paulus niet zo lang in Filippi, Tessalonica, Berea, Athene om te onderrichten. Daarom is het zo verrassend dat hij in Korinte anderhalf jaar blijft. Deze ongewone handelswijze wordt bij Lucas verklaard door een visioen. Korinte zal een belangrijke christengemeente worden en Paulus moet zich daar speciaal inzetten. Er is nog iets speciaals in deze tekst. Gallio is de broer van de filosoof en hij was proconsul in 50-51. Dit wordt voor ons een belangrijk element van datering van Paulus’ verblijf in Korinte en van zijn eerste brief aan de Thessalonicensen.

Uit de Handelingen van de Apostelen

Toen Paulus te Korinte verbleef
sprak de Heer in een nachtelijk visioen tot hem :
“Wees niet bevreesd
maar spreek, en zwijg niet.
“Ik ben met u
en niemand zal u aanraken om u kwaad te doen,
want in deze stad behoren veel mensen Mij toe.”
Anderhalf jaar bleef hij daar wonen
terwijl hij bij hen het woord Gods onderwees.
Onder het proconsulaat echter van Gallio in Achaïa
keerden de Joden zich als één man tegen Paulus
en brachten hem voor de rechtbank.
Zij verklaarden :
“Deze man tracht de mensen over te halen
tot onwettige godsverering.”
Paulus wilde juist iets zeggen
toen Gallio de Joden antwoordde:
“Als het ging over een of ander onrecht of ernstig misdrijf, Joden,
zou ik u vanzelfsprekend geduldig aanhoren.
“Maar zijn het twisten over een woord,
over namen en over die Wet van u,
dan moet gij zelf maar zien.
“Daarover wil ik geen rechter zijn.”
Hij joeg ze van zijn rechterstoel weg.
Nu wierpen allen zich op Sóstenes, de overste van de synagoge,
en gaven hem voor de rechterstoel een pak slaag.
Gallio trok er zich niets van aan.
Paulus bleef daar nog vele dagen,
nam toen afscheid van de broeders
en ging in gezelschap van Priscilla en Aquila scheep naar Syrië.
Eerst had hij in Kenchreë zijn hoofdhaar laten afknippen
want hij stond onder gelofte.

TUSSENZANG                Ps. 47(46), 2-3, 4-5, 6-7

Koning is God over heel de aarde.

Alle volkeren, klapt in de handen,
jubelt voor God met blij geroep.
Want groot is de Heer en alom geducht,

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijke huis

6. Mijn voorganger Benedictus XVI heeft de uitnodiging hernieuwd om
“de structurele oorzaken van het disfunctioneren van de wereldeconomie
uit te bannen en de groeimodellen te verbeteren die niet in staat lijken het
respect voor het milieu te waarborgen”. Hij heeft eraan herinnerd dat de
wereld niet kan worden geanalyseerd door alleen maar één van de aspecten
ervan te isoleren, omdat “het boek van de natuur één en ondeelbaar is”
en milieu, leven, seksualiteit, gezin, sociale betrekkingen en andere aspecten insluit.
Dientengevolge “hangt het verval van de natuur nauw samen
met de cultuur die vorm geeft aan de menselijke samenleving”. Paus
Benedictus heeft ons voorgehouden te erkennen dat de natuurlijke
omgeving vol wonden is die door ons onverantwoordelijk gedrag zijn
veroorzaakt. Ook het maatschappelijk milieu kent zijn wonden.
Maar alle worden in wezen veroorzaakt door hetzelfde kwaad, namelijk
door het idee dat er geen onbetwistbare waarheden bestaan die ons leven
leiden, waardoor de menselijke vrijheid geen grenzen kent.
Men vergeet dat “de mens niet alleen zichzelf makende vrijheid is.
De mens schept zichzelf niet. Hij is geest en wil, maar hij is ook natuur”.
Met vaderlijke bezorgdheid heeft hij ons uitgenodigd te erkennen dat
de schepping in gevaar is gebracht “waar wijzelf de laatste instantie zijn,
waar het eenvoudigweg ons eigendom is en wij het alleen maar voor
onszelf verspillen. En de verspilling van de schepping begint waar wij
geen enkele instantie meer boven ons erkennen, maar alleen onszelf zien”.

Consideración
En la repetición, vimos cómo la catequesis era a menudo mínima. Tampoco Pablo se queda tanto tiempo en Filipos, Tesalónica, Berea, Atenas para enseñar. Por eso sorprende tanto que se quede en Corinto un año y medio. Este inusual proceder se explica en Lucas por una visión. Corinto se convertirá en una importante congregación cristiana y Pablo debe realizar allí un esfuerzo especial. Hay algo más especial en este texto. Galión es el hermano del filósofo y fue procónsul en 50-51. Esto se convierte para nosotros en un elemento importante para fechar la estancia de Pablo en Corinto y su primera carta a los Tesalonicenses.

PRIMERA LECTURA            Hechos 18:9-18

En esta ciudad, muchas personas me pertenecen.

De los Hechos de los Apóstoles

Cuando Pablo estaba en Corinto
el Señor le habló en una visión nocturna :
“No tengas miedo
habla y no calles.
“Yo estoy contigo
y nadie te tocará para hacerte daño
porque en esta ciudad mucha gente me pertenece”
Durante año y medio permaneció allí
mientras enseñaba la palabra de Dios entre ellos.
Sin embargo, bajo el proconsulado de Galión en Acaya
los Judios se volvieron como uno contra Pablo
y lo llevaron a juicio.
Declararon :
“Este hombre trata de persuadir a la gente
a la adoración ilegal de Dios”
Pablo estaba a punto de decir algo
cuando Galión respondió a los judíos:
“Si se tratara de alguna injusticia o delito grave, Judios ,
naturalmente os escucharía pacientemente.
“Pero las disputas son sobre una palabra ,
sobre nombres y sobre esa Ley vuestra,
entonces debéis verlo por vosotros mismos.
“En eso no seré juez.”
Los echó de su tribunal.
Ahora todos se arrojaron sobre Sóstenes, el jefe de la sinagoga,
y le dieron una paliza ante el tribunal.
A Galión no le importó.
Pablo permaneció allí muchos días,
luego se despidió de los hermanos
y se embarcó para Siria en compañía de Priscila y Aquila.
Antes se había cortado el cabello en Cencreas
pues estaba bajo juramento.

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

6. Mi predecesor Benedicto XVI renovó la invitación a
“eliminar las causas estructurales de la disfunción de la economía mundial
y mejorar los modelos de crecimiento que parecen incapaces de garantizar el
respeto del medio ambiente”. Recordó que el
mundo no puede analizarse simplemente aislando uno de sus aspectos
de él, porque “el libro de la naturaleza es uno e indivisible”
e incluye el medio ambiente, la vida, la sexualidad, la familia, las relaciones sociales y otros aspectos.
En consecuencia, “la decadencia de la naturaleza está estrechamente relacionada
con la cultura que configura la sociedad humana”. El Papa
Benedicto nos exhortó a reconocer que el entorno natural
medio ambiente está lleno de heridas causadas por nuestro comportamiento irresponsable
causadas. También el entorno social tiene sus heridas.
Pero todas están causadas esencialmente por el mismo mal, a saber
por la idea de que no hay verdades incuestionables que
guían nuestras vidas, dejando la libertad humana sin límites.
La gente olvida que “el hombre no es sólo libertad que se crea a sí mismo.
El hombre no se crea a sí mismo. Es espíritu y voluntad, pero también es naturaleza”.
Con paternal preocupación, nos invitó a reconocer que
la creación se ha visto comprometida “donde nosotros mismos somos la autoridad final ,
donde es simplemente de nuestra propiedad y sólo la malgastamos
para nosotros. Y el despilfarro de la creación comienza cuando
ya no reconocemos ninguna agencia por encima de nosotros, sino que sólo nos vemos a nosotros mismos”.

Invitation

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?

This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Available every day.

Consideration
On repeat, we saw how catechesis was often minimal. Nor does Paul stay that long in Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens to teach. That is why it is so surprising that he stays in Corinth for a year and a half. This unusual course of action is explained in Luke by a vision. Corinth will become an important Christian congregation and Paul is to make a special effort there. There is something else special in this text. Gallio is the brother of the philosopher and he was proconsul in 50-51. This becomes for us an important element of dating Paul’s stay in Corinth and of his first letter to the Thessalonians.

FIRST READING              Acts 18:9-18

In this city, many people belong to Me.

From the Acts of the Apostles

When Paul was at Corinth
the Lord spoke to him in a night vision :
“Do not be afraid
but speak, and be not silent.
“I am with you
and no one will touch you to harm you,
for in this city many people belong to Me.”
For a year and a half he stayed there
while he taught the word of God among them.
However, under the proconsulship of Gallio in Achaia
the Jews turned as one against Paul
and brought him to trial.
They declared :
“This man seeks to persuade people
to unlawful god worship.”
Paul was just about to say something
when Gallio replied to the Jews:
“If it was about some injustice or serious crime, Jews ,
i would naturally listen to you patiently.
“But are the disputes about a word ,
about names and about that Law of yours,
then ye must see for yourselves.
“On that I will not be a judge.”
He chased them away from his judgment seat.
Now all threw themselves on Sóstenes, the ruler of the synagogue,
and gave him a beating before the judgment seat.
Gallio did not care.
Paul remained there for many days,
then said goodbye to the brothers
and set sail for Syria in the company of Priscilla and Aquila.
First he had had his head hair cut off in Kenchreë
for he was under vow.

6. My predecessor Benedict XVI renewed the invitation to
“to eliminate the structural causes of the dysfunction of the world economy
eliminate and improve the growth models that seem incapable of ensuring the
respect for the environment”. He recalled that the
world cannot be analysed by merely isolating one of its aspects
of it, because “the book of nature is one and indivisible”
and includes environment, life, sexuality, family, social relations and other aspects.
Consequently, “the decay of nature is closely related
with the culture that shapes human society”. Pope
Benedict enjoined us to recognise that the natural
environment is full of wounds caused by our irresponsible behaviour.
The social environment too has its wounds.
But all are essentially caused by the same evil, namely
by the idea that there are no indisputable truths that
guide our lives, leaving human freedom without limits.
People forget that “man is not only self-made freedom.
Man does not create himself. He is spirit and will, but he is also nature”.
With paternal concern, he invited us to recognise that
creation has been compromised “where we ourselves are the final authority ,
where it is simply our property and we only waste it for
ourselves. And the waste of creation begins where we
no longer recognise any agency above us, but see only ourselves”.
