Uitnodiging
Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?
Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
De lezing bevat een concluderende oproep van de brief. Deze brief spreekt herhaaldelijk over heerschappijen en machten uit hemelse regionen. In het wereldbeeld van die tijd is de aarde in verdiepingen opgebouwd. In de lagere kringen huizen de boze geesten. Aan de top staat de verheerlijkte Christus. De ruimtelijke beeldspraak moet niet letterlijk verstaan worden.
EERSTE LEZING Ef. 6, 10-20
Legt de wapenrusting Gods aan om te kunnen standhouden.
Uit de brief van de heilige apostel Paulus aan de christenen van Efeze
Broeders en zusters,
Zoekt uw kracht bij de Heer en zijn almacht.
Legt de wapenrusting Gods aan
om te kunnen standhouden tegen de listen van de duivel.
Want onze strijd gaat niet tegen vlees en bloed
maar tegen de heerschappijen, tegen de machten,
tegen de wereldbeheersers van deze duisternis,
tegen de boze geesten in de hemelen.
Grijpt daarom naar de wapenrusting Gods ;
dan kunt ge weerstand bieden op de dag der verschrikking
en staande blijven, strijdend tot het einde.
Staat dan,
uw lendenen omgord met de waarheid,
bekleed met het harnas der gerechtigheid,
de voeten geschoeid met ijver voor het evangelie van de vrede.
Hanteert daarbij het grote schild van het geloof,
waarmee gij alle brandende pijlen van de boze kunt doven.
Neemt ook de helm van het heil
en het zwaard van de Geest,
dat is : Het woord Gods.
Bidt en smeekt in de Geest
bij elke gelegenheid en op allerlei wijzen.
Houdt daartoe nachtwaken
waarbij gij met volharding God smeekt voor alle heiligen.
Bidt ook voor mij,
dat mij het woord gegeven mag worden als ik mijn mond open
zodat ik vrijmoedig het mysterie openbaar kan maken
waarvoor ik een gezant ben in boeien.
Bidt dat ik het vrijmoedig mag verkondigen,
zoals het mijn plicht is.

Verheerlijken wil ik de Heer, mijn rots.
Verheerlijken wil ik de Heer, mijn rots,
Hij maakte mijn armen sterk in de strijd,
mijn handen bekwaam in het vechten.
Mijn steun en mijn burcht, mijn beschermer en redder,
mijn schild en mijn toevlucht, die volken bedwingt.

dan speel ik voor U op de lier.

Het past niet dat een profeet buiten Jeruzalem omkomt.

In die tijd kwamen enige Farizeeën Jezus zeggen :
“Vlucht, ga hier vandaan,
want Herodes wil U vermoorden.”
Hij sprak tot hen :
Zie, Ik drijf duivels uit
en Ik bewerk genezingen vandaag en morgen ;
en op de derde dag komt voor Mij de voltooiing.
“Maar vandaag, morgen en overmorgen moet Ik voorttrekken,
want het past niet dat een profeet buiten Jeruzalem omkomt.
“Jeruzalem, Jeruzalem,
dat de profeten doodt en stenigt die tot u zijn gezonden !
“Hoe dikwijls heb Ik uw kinderen willen verzamelen,
zoals een kloek haar kuikens verzamelt onder haar vleugels,
maar gij hebt niet gewild.
“Zie, uw huis zal onbewoond achtergelaten worden.
“Ik zeg u : Gij zult Mij niet meer zien
totdat de tijd komt waarop gij zult zeggen :

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis
217. Als “de uiterlijke woestijnen zich in de wereld vermenigvuldigen. omdat de innerlijke woestijnen zo uitgestrekt zijn geworden”, is de ecologische crisis een oproep tot een diepgaande innerlijke bekering. Wij moeten echter ook erkennen dat sommige geëngageerde en aan het gebed toegewijde Christenen onder het voorwendsel van realisme en pragmatisme vaak spotten met de zorgen over het milieu. Anderen zijn passief, zij besluiten niet hun gewoonten te veranderen en worden inconsequent. Het ontbreekt hun dus aan ecologische bekering, die met zich meebrengt dat zij alle gevolgen van de ontmoeting met Jezus naar voren laten komen in de relatie met de hen omringende wereld. Het beleven van de roeping behoeders van Gods werk te zijn is een wezenlijk onderdeel van een deugdzaam bestaan, het is niet iets optioneel en evenmin een secundair aspect van de christelijke ervaring.

May I hereby draw your attention to
the daily reading of the Gospel?
This invitation wants to share with You the joy
of the Gospel. Everyone, no one excepted,
can experience that joy by opening their hearts
to the healing power of God’s word.

Consideration
The reading includes a concluding appeal of the letter. This letter repeatedly speaks of dominions and powers from heavenly regions. In the worldview of the time, the earth is built in tiers. In the lower reaches, evil spirits dwell. At the top is the glorified Christ. The spatial imagery is not to be understood literally.
FIRST READING Eph. 6, 10-20
Put on the armour of God to stand firm.
From the letter of the holy apostle Paul to the Christians of Ephesus
Brothers and sisters,
Seek your strength in the Lord and his omnipotence.
Put on the armour of God
in order to be able to stand firm against the wiles of the devil.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood
but against the dominions, against the powers,
against the rulers of this darkness,
against the evil spirits in the heavens.
Therefore take hold of the armour of God ;
then you will be able to resist in the day of terror
and stand firm, fighting to the end.
Stand then,
gird up your loins with the truth,
clothed with the armour of righteousness,
feet shod with zeal for the gospel of peace.
Handle thereby the great shield of faith,
with which thou canst quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.
Take also the helmet of salvation
and the sword of the Spirit,
that is: The word of God.
Pray and supplicate in the Spirit

“But today, tomorrow and the day after, I must go forth ,
for it is not fitting that a prophet should perish outside Jerusalem.
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
that kills and stones the prophets sent to you !
“How often have I wished to gather thy children ,
as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,
but ye have not willed.
“Behold, thy house shall be left uninhabited.

On caring for the common home
217. If “the outer deserts multiply in the world. because the inner deserts have become so vast”, the ecological crisis is a call for a profound inner conversion. However, we must also recognise that some committed and prayerful Christians, under the pretext of realism and pragmatism, often scoff at environmental concerns. Others are passive, deciding not to change their habits and becoming inconsistent. They thus lack ecological conversion, which entails letting all the consequences of their encounter with Jesus come to the fore in their relationship with the world around them. Living out the call to be guardians of God’s work is an essential part of a virtuous existence, it is neither something optional nor a secondary aspect of the Christian experience.
