can experience that joy by opening their hearts

Consideration

Today’s reading is so rich and so full of references to the Old and New Testaments that we must make a choice. Let us then take theliving stone thatis Christ himself. This is a reference to Isaiah (8:14). It remains a painful realisation that the Jewish people stumbled over what was meant to be their very foundation. That stone becomes a living stone, and all believers are living stones of the spiritual temple, the Church, which replaces the destroyed temple of Jerusalem. This is in harmony with the spiritualisation of the concept of the temple in the New Testament.

First Reading                        1 Pet. 2:2–5, 9–12
You are a royal priesthood, a holy nation,
called to proclaim the glorious deeds
of Him who has called you.

From the First Letter of Saint Peter the Apostle

Brothers and sisters,
Be like newborn children,
eager for the spiritual, unadulterated milk
that will bring you to maturity for salvation.
For you have already tasted the sweetness of the Lord.

Come to Him,
the living stone,
rejected by men,
but chosen and precious in God’s sight.
Let yourselves also,
as living stones,
be incorporated into the building of the spiritual temple.
Offer spiritual sacrifices, as a holy priesthood,
which are pleasing to God
through Jesus Christ.

Mark

At that time, when Jesus,
accompanied by his disciples and a large crowd,
was leaving Jericho,
a blind beggar was sitting by the roadside,
Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus.
As soon as he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,
he began to cry out loudly:
“Jesus, Son of David,
have mercy on me!”
Many rebuked him, telling him to be quiet,
but he cried out all the more:
“Son of David, have mercy on me!”
Jesus stopped and said:
“Call him here.”
They called out to the blind man:
“Take heart!
Get up, He is calling you.”
He threw off his cloak,
jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.
Jesus asked him:
“What do you want Me to do for you?”
The blind man answered Him:
“Rabbi, let me see!”
And Jesus said to him:
“Go; your faith has healed you.”
Immediately he could see
and he joined Him on His journey.

129. If we are to continue to provide employment, it is essential to promote an economy that favours a diversity of production and creativity in enterprise. For example, there is a wide variety of small-scale food production systems that continue to feed the majority of the world’s population, using a limited amount of land
and water and producing less waste, whether on
small plots of arable land and in vegetable gardens, through hunting and the harvesting
of forest products, or through small-scale fishing. Large-scale operations force
small farmers, particularly in the agricultural sector, to sell their land or to
abandon their traditional production methods. Attempts by some of them to develop other, more diversified forms of production prove futile due to the difficulty of accessing regional or global markets, or because the sales and transport infrastructure serves the interests of large corporations. The authorities have the right and the responsibility to take measures that provide clear and robust support for small producers and the diversification of production. An economic freedom from which all truly benefit may sometimes make it necessary to set limits on those who possess the most resources and financial power. A purely
theoretical economic freedom, where circumstances prevent many from actually benefiting from it, and access to work is reduced, becomes a contradictory narrative that does politics no credit. Entrepreneurship, which is a noble vocation aimed at producing wealth and improving the world for all,
can be a highly fruitful method of giving a boost to the region in which the activities
take place, especially if one understands that the creation
of jobs forms an indispensable part of serving the common good.

Uitnodiging

Mag ik hiermee Uw aandacht vragen voor
het dagelijks lezen van het Evangelie?

Deze uitnodiging wil U deelgenoot maken aan de vreugde
van het evangelie. Iedereen, niemand uitgezonderd,
kan die vreugde ervaren door zijn hart open te stellen
voor de genezende werking van Gods woord.

Overweging
De lezing van vandaag valt duidelijk uiteen in twee delen en tweemaal is het trefzeker de kern van de evangelische boodschap. Een eerste deel is leerstelling: Gij zijt verlost door het bloed van Christus. God heeft Hem van de doden opgewekt. Het tweede deel is de kern van de morele boodschap: mekaar liefhebben als nieuw geborenen en vanuit God, de eeuwige. Met een contrast als slot: de vergankelijkheid van al het aardse; citaat uit Jesaja 2 (40,8).

EERSTE LEZING                1 Petr. 1, 18-25

Gij zijt verlost door het kostbaar bloed van Christus,
het lam zonder vlek of gebrek. 

Uit de eerste brief van de heilige apostel Petrus

Broeders en zusters,

Gij weet dat gij niet met vergankelijke dingen
zoals goud en zilver zijt verlost uit het zinloze bestaan
dat gij van uw vaderen had geërfd.
Gij zijt verlost door het kostbaar bloed van Christus,
het lam zonder vlek of gebrek,
dat uitverkoren was vóór de grondlegging der wereld
maar eerst op het einde der tijden is verschenen
om uwentwil.
Door Hem gelooft gij in God,
die Hem van de doden heeft opgewekt
en Hem de heerlijkheid gegeven heeft ;

EVANGELIE               Mc. 10, 32-45

Wij gaan nu naar Jeruzalem
waar de Mensenzoon zal worden overgeleverd.

Uit het heilig evangelie van onze Heer Jezus Christus volgens
Marcus

In die tijd trokken de leerlingen voort, op weg naar Jeruzalem
en Jezus ging voor hen uit ;
zij waren ontdaan
en ook die Hem volgden waren bevreesd.
Hij nam opnieuw de twaalf terzijde
en begon hun te spreken over wat Hem zou overkomen :
“Wij gaan nu naar Jeruzalem
waar de Mensenzoon
aan de hogepriesters en schriftgeleerden zal worden overgeleverd.
“Zij zullen Hem ter dood veroordelen
en aan de heidenen overleveren ;
ze zullen Hem bespotten en bespuwen,
Hem geselen en doden,
maar drie dagen later zal Hij verrijzen.”
Toen kwamen Jakobus en Johannes, de zonen van Zebedeüs,
naar hem toe en zeiden :
“Meester, wij willen dat U voor ons doet wat wij U vragen.”
Hij antwoordde hun :
“Wt wilt ge dan dat Ik voor u doe ?”
Zij zeiden Hem :
“Geef dat in uw glorie een van ons aan uw rechter-
en de ander aan uw linkerhand moge zitten.”
Maar Jezus zei hun :
“Ge weet niet wat ge vraagt.
“Zijt ge in staat de beker te drinken die Ik drink
en met het doopsel gedoopt te worden
waarmee Ik gedoopt word ?”
Zij antwoordden Hem :
“Ja, dat kunnen wij.”
“Inderdaad,
– gaf Jezus toe –
de beker die Ik drink zult gij drinken,en met het doopsel waarmee Ik gedoopt word
zult gij gedoopt worden ;
maar het is niet aan Mij
u te doen zitten aan mijn rechter- of linkerhand,
omdat alleen zij dit verkrijgen
voor wie dit is bereid.”
Toe de tien anderen dit hoorden
werden ze kwaad op Jakobus en Johannes.
Jezus echter riep hen bij zich en sprak tot hen :
“Gij weet dat zij die als heersers der volkeren gelden
hen met ijzeren vuist regeren
en dat de groten misbruik maken van hun macht over hen.
“Dit mag bij ú niet het geval zijn ;
wie onder u groot wil worden
moet dienaar van u zijn,
en wie onder u de eerste wil zijn
moet de slaaf van allen zijn,
want ook de Mensenzoon
is niet gekomen om gediend te worden,
maar om te dienen
en om zijn leven te geven als losprijs voor velen.”

la lectura diaria del Evangelio?

Esta invitación tiene por objeto hacerle partícipe de la alegría
del Evangelio. Todos, sin excepción,
pueden experimentar esa alegría abriendo su corazón
a la acción sanadora de la palabra de Dios.

Consideración
La lectura de hoy se divide claramente en dos partes y, en ambas ocasiones, da en el blanco del mensaje evangélico. La primera parte es doctrinal: «Habéis sido salvados por la sangre de Cristo». Dios lo resucitó de entre los muertos. La segunda parte es el núcleo del mensaje moral: amarnos unos a otros como renacidos y desde Dios, el eterno. Con un contraste como colofón: la fugacidad de todo lo terrenal; cita de Isaías 2 (40,8).

PRIMERA LECTURA                 1  Pedro 1, 18-25

Habéis sido rescatados por la preciosa sangre de Cristo,
el cordero sin mancha ni defecto. 

De la primera carta del santo apóstol Pedro

Hermanos y hermanas,

Sabéis que no fuisteis rescatados con cosas perecederas,
como el oro o la plata, de la vana forma de vida
que heredasteis de vuestros padres.
Fuisteis rescatados por la sangre preciosa de Cristo,
el cordero sin mancha ni defecto,
que fue escogido antes de la fundación del mundo,
pero que apareció solo al final de los tiempos
por causa de vosotros.
Por Él creéis en Dios,
quien lo resucitó de entre los muertos
y le dio la gloria;
por eso vuestra fe en Dios es también esperanza en Dios.
Ahora que habéis purificado vuestras almas
para acoger con obediencia la verdad,
amaos unos a otros con amor fraternal sincero,
con fervor y de todo corazón,
como personas que han renacido,
no de una semilla perecedera,
sino de la palabra imperecedera
del Dios vivo y eterno.
Porque toda carne es como la hierba,

y el otro a tu izquierda».
Pero Jesús les dijo:
«No sabéis lo que pedís.
¿Sois capaces de beber la copa que yo bebo
y de ser bautizados con el bautismo
con el que yo seré bautizado?»
Le respondieron:
«Sí, podemos».
«En efecto —admitió Jesús—,
la copa que yo bebo, la beberéis, y con el bautismo con que yo soy bautizado,
seréis bautizados;
pero no me corresponde a mí
hacer que os sentéis a mi derecha o a mi izquierda,
porque solo lo obtendrán aquellos
para quienes está preparado».
Cuando los otros diez oyeron esto,
se enfadaron con Santiago y Juan.
Pero Jesús los llamó y les dijo:
«Sabéis que los que se consideran gobernantes de las naciones
las gobiernan con mano de hierro,
y que los grandes abusan de su poder sobre ellas.
«Esto no debe ser así entre vosotros;
el que quiera ser grande entre vosotros
debe ser vuestro servidor,
y quien quiera ser el primero entre vosotros,
que sea el esclavo de todos,
pues tampoco el Hijo del Hombre
vino para ser servido,
sino para servir
y para dar su vida en rescate por muchos».

Consideration
Today’s reading is clearly divided into two parts, and twice it strikes at the very heart of the Gospel message. The first part is doctrinal: You have been redeemed by the blood of Christ. God raised Him from the dead. The second part is the heart of the moral message: to love one another as those born anew and from God, the eternal One. With a contrast to conclude: the transience of all earthly things; a quotation from Isaiah 2 (40:8).

FIRST READING                        1 Peter 1, 18–25

You have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ,
the Lamb without blemish or defect. 

From the first letter of Saint Peter the Apostle

Brothers and sisters,

You know that you were not redeemed with perishable things,
such as gold or silver, from the empty way of life
you inherited from your forefathers.
You were redeemed by the precious blood of Christ,
the Lamb without blemish or defect,
who was chosen before the foundation of the world
but appeared only at the end of time
for your sake.
Through Him you believe in God,
who raised Him from the dead
and gave Him glory;
therefore your faith in God is also hope in God.
Now that you have purified your souls
by your obedience to the truth,
you must love one another with sincere brotherly love,

as people who have been born again,
not from perishable seed,
but through the imperishable word

where the Son of Man will be handed over.

At that time, the disciples set out for Jerusalem
and Jesus went before them
they were distressed
and those who followed Him were also afraid.
He took the Twelve aside again
and began to speak to them about what was to befall Him:
“We are now going up to Jerusalem,
where the Son of Man
will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes.
“They will condemn Him to death,
and hand Him over to the Gentiles;
they will mock Him and spit on Him,
flagellate Him and kill Him,
but three days later He will rise.”
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
came to him and said:
“Master, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”
He replied to them:
“What do you want me to do for you?”
They said to Him:
“Grant that in Your glory one of us may sit at Your right hand
and the other at Your left.”
But Jesus said to them:
“You do not know what you are asking.
“Are you able to drink the cup that I drink
and be baptised with the baptism
with which I am baptised?”
They replied to Him:
“Yes, we can.”
“Indeed,”
– Jesus admitted –
“the cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptised,
you will be baptised;
but it is not for Me
to make you sit at my right or left hand,
for this is reserved only for those
for whom it has been prepared.”
When the other ten heard this,
they were indignant with James and John.
But Jesus called them to him and said to them:
“You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the nations
rule them with an iron fist,
and that the great ones abuse their power over them.
“This must not be the case with you;
whoever among you wishes to become great
must be your servant,
and whoever wishes to be first among you
must be the slave of all,
for even the Son of Man
did not come to be served,
but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

In de brief van Petrus werden de oudtestamentische profeten en de evangelisten in één adem vermeld. De auteur wil vooral de continuïteit tussen Oud en Nieuw Testament benadrukken. De redding  die in Christus is gekomen werd voorspeld en vervuld. Dan moeten ook wij anders gaan leven. Het tweede deel van deze lezing bevat raadgevingen voor het christelijke handelen en fundeert ze.

EERSTE LEZING                         1 Petr. 1, 10-16

De profeten profeteerden over de genade die voor u bestemd was.
Weest daarom nuchter
en vestigt heel uw hoop op die genade.

Uit de eerste brief van de heilige apostel Petrus

Broeders en zusters,

Reeds de profeten hebben gezocht en gevorst
naar de redding van uw ziel,
toen zij profeteerden over de genade die voor u bestemd was.
Zij vroegen zich af op welk tijdstip en welke omstandigheden
de Geest van Christus in hen deelde,
toen Hij voorspelde al het lijden dat over Christus zou komen
en de daarop volgende verheerlijking.
Maar hun werd geopenbaard
dat zij deze boodschap moesten beheren voor u,
niet voor zichzelf.
En nu is die boodschap bij monde van de evangeliepredikers
openlijk aan u verkondigd,
in de kracht van de heilige Geest
die van de hemel is neergezonden.
Dit zijn geheimen waarin zelfs engelen verlangen door te dringen.

Weest daarom wakker en actief,
weest nuchter,
vestigt heel uw hoop op de genade
die uw deel wordt wanneer Jezus Christus zich zal openbaren.
Geeft gehoor aan de waarheid,
geeft niet langer toe aan de lusten
die uw leven beheersten in de tijd van uw onwetendheid.
Hij, die u geroepen heeft, is heilig.
Weest heilig zoals Hij,
in heel uw gedrag
want er staat geschreven :
“Weest heilig
want Ik ben heilig.”

TUSSENZANG                                         Ps. 98(97), 1, 2-3ab, 3c-4

 Zijn weldaden deed de Heer ons kennen.

Zingt voor de Heer een nieuw gezang
omdat Hij wonderen deed.
Zijn hand deed zich krachtig gelden,
de macht van zijn heilige arm.

de volkeren zijn gerechtigheid.
Opnieuw bleek zijn goedheid en trouw
ten gunste van Israëls huis.

om Mij en om de Blijde Boodschap heeft prijsgegeven,

zij het ook gepaard met vervolgingen,
en in de toekomstige wereld het eeuwige leven.

Over de zorg voor ons gemeenschappelijk huis

127. Wij stellen dat “de mens de ontwerper, het centrum en het doel van
het gehele sociaal-economische leven is”. Wanneer desalniettemin in de
mens het vermogen om te aanschouwen en te respecteren verloren gaat,
worden de voorwaarden geschapen waardoor het idee van arbeid wordt
misvormd. Men moet er altijd aan denken dat de mens tegelijkertijd “in

En la carta de Pedro se menciona en un mismo contexto a los profetas del Antiguo Testamento y a los evangelistas. El autor quiere destacar sobre todo la continuidad entre el Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento. La salvación que ha llegado en Cristo fue anunciada y se ha cumplido. Por eso, también nosotros debemos cambiar nuestra forma de vivir. La segunda parte de esta lectura contiene consejos para la conducta cristiana y los fundamenta.

127. Afirmamos que «el ser humano es el artífice, el centro y la finalidad de
toda la vida socioeconómica». Sin embargo, cuando el
ser humano pierde la capacidad de contemplar y respetar,
se crean las condiciones que distorsionan la idea del trabajo. Hay que
recordar siempre que el hombre es al mismo tiempo «capaz de ser el artífice
responsable de su mejora material,
de su progreso moral y de la plena realización de su destino espiritual».
El trabajo debería ser el ámbito de este desarrollo personal multifacético,
donde se desarrollan muchas dimensiones de la vida,

In Peter’s letter, the Old Testament prophets and the evangelists are mentioned in the same breath. The author wishes above all to emphasise the continuity between the Old and New Testaments. The salvation that has come through Christ was foretold and fulfilled. Therefore, we too must live differently. The second part of this reading contains advice on Christian conduct and provides its foundation.

The prophets prophesied about the grace that was destined for you.
Therefore, be sober
and set your whole hope on that grace.

Brothers and sisters,

The prophets themselves searched and inquired carefully
about the salvation of your souls,
as they prophesied about the grace that was to be yours.
They wondered what time and circumstances it was that the Spirit of Christ within them was revealing,

and the subsequent glorification.
But it was revealed to them

127. We maintain that “the human person is the designer, the centre and the goal of
the whole of socio-economic life”. When, nevertheless, the
human person loses the capacity to contemplate and respect,
the conditions are created whereby the concept of work is
distorted. One must always bear in mind that the human person is at the same time “
capable of being the responsible agent of his own material betterment,
his moral progress and the full fulfilment of his spiritual
destiny”. Work should be the domain for this
multifaceted personal development, in which many dimensions of life
come into play: creativity, planning for the future, the development of
abilities, the practice of values, communication with others, and an
attitude of reverence. That is why contemporary society demands more
than just the limited interests of businesses and a questionable economic
rationality; it demands that “the goal of providing all people with access
to work be pursued as a priority”.

Vandaag op de dag na Pinksteren, vieren we Maria als Moeder van de Kerk.
Gisterenvierden we de komst van de Heilige Geest, die de leerlingen in beweging
zette. Maria was in hun midden, biddend en bemoedigend.
Zoals zij er was voor de eerste geloofsgemeenschap,
zo is zij er ook vandaag voor ons.
Zij hderinnert ons eraan dat de Kerk geen gebouw is, maar een familie
waarin we elkaar als broeders en zusters dragen, met haar als onze moederlijke gids.

Hebt gij de heilige Geest ontvangen toen ge het geloof hebt aangenomen ?

In die dagen kwam Paulus
na zijn reis door het binnenland in Efeze.

Over de zorg voor het gemeenschappelijk huis

126. Laten wij ook iets oppakken uit de lange kloostertraditie. Aan het
begin begunstigde zij in zekere zin de vlucht uit de wereld door zo te
trachten zich te verwijderen van de decadentie van de stad. Daarom
zochten de monniken de woestijn, ervan overtuigd dat het de geschikte plaats
was om de tegenwoordigheid van God te herkennen. Vervolgens wilde de
heilige Benedictus van Nurcia dat zijn monniken in gemeenschap leefden
en daarbij gebed en studie verenigden met handwerk (Ora et labora). Dit
invoeren van handwerk dat van spirituele betekenis is doortrokken, bleek
revolutionair te zijn. Men leerde groei en heiliging te zoeken in een
vervlechting van bezinning en arbeid. Deze manier van het beleven van
de arbeid stelt ons meer in staat tot de zorg en het respect voor het milieu,
en vervult onze relatie met de wereld van een gezonde soberheid.

así también está hoy presente para nosotros.
Nos recuerda que la Iglesia no es un edificio, sino una familia

¿Recibisteis el Espíritu Santo cuando abrazasteis la fe?

En aquellos días, Pablo,

«¿Recibisteis el Espíritu Santo
cuando abrazasteis la fe?»
Ellos respondieron:
«Ni siquiera hemos oído
que exista un Espíritu Santo».
Entonces él les dijo: «¿Cómo os habéis bautizado, pues?»
Ellos respondieron: «Con el bautismo de Juan».
Pablo les dijo:
«Juan bautizaba como señal de arrepentimiento,
pero decía al pueblo
que creyeran en aquel que vendría después de él, es decir, en Jesús».
Al oír esto,
se bautizaron en el nombre del Señor Jesús.
Después de que Pablo les impusiera las manos,

Sobre el cuidado de la casa común

126. Tomemos también algo de la larga tradición monástica. En sus inicios,
esta favoreció en cierto modo la huida del mundo, al tratar de
alejarse de la decadencia de la ciudad. Por eso,
los monjes buscaron el desierto, convencidos de que era el lugar adecuado
para reconocer la presencia de Dios. Posteriormente, el
santo Benito de Nursia quiso que sus monjes vivieran en comunidad
y unieran la oración y el estudio con el trabajo manual (Ora et labora). Esta
introducción del trabajo manual, impregnado de significado espiritual, resultó
ser revolucionaria. Se aprendió a buscar el crecimiento y la santificación en una
combinación de reflexión y trabajo. Esta forma de vivir
el trabajo nos hace más capaces de cuidar y respetar el medio ambiente,
y llena nuestra relación con el mundo de una sana sobriedad.

Introduction
Today, on the day after Pentecost, we celebrate Mary as Mother of the Church.
Yesterday we celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit, who set the disciples in motion.
Mary was in their midst, praying and encouraging them.
Just as she was there for the first community of believers,
so she is there for us today.
She reminds us that the Church is not a building, but a family
in which we support one another as brothers and sisters, with her as our motherly guide.

FIRST READING                  Acts  19, 1b-6a
Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you came to believe?

From the Acts of the Apostles

In those days, Paul, having travelled through the interior, came to Ephesus.
There he met some disciples and asked them:
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you came to believe?”
They replied:
“We have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
Then he said: “How then were you baptised?”
They replied: “With the baptism of John.”
Paul continued:
“John baptised as a sign of repentance,
but he told the people
that they must believe in the One who came after him, that is, Jesus.”

126. Let us also draw on the long monastic tradition. At the beginning, it
in a sense favoured a flight from the world by seeking to
distance itself from the decadence of the city. That is why
the monks sought out the desert, convinced that it was the suitable place
to recognise the presence of God. Subsequently, Saint Benedicto of Nursia
wished for his monks to live in community,
combining prayer and study with manual labour (Ora et labora). This
introduction of manual labour imbued with spiritual significance proved
to be revolutionary. People learnt to seek growth and sanctification in
an interweaving of reflection and labour. This way of experiencing labour
enables us to care for and respect the environment,
and imbues our relationship with the world with a healthy simplicity.
